Last night in Brooklyn, a crowd of editors and women about town gathered at the townhouse of Hildy Kuryk to fête Ruchi New York founder Ruchi Kotahwala. Guests gathered in the backyard garden to enjoy cocktails and the glittering wares on display, which, per Kotahwala, they were encouraged to play with. Kuryk, founder of Artemis Strategies and Vogue contributing editor, decided to swap her earrings mid-event just to keep things fresh.

Though designed in New York, Kotahwala’s pieces, which employ a dazzling use of color, evoke her Indian heritage. Surveying the jewelry, guests could see Colombian sapphires (Kotahwala’s favorite) contrasted with pink stones, fire opal hoop earrings arranged in an ombré effect, and sapphires in every shade imaginable—they’re not only blue!

Her light-capturing pieces are also a shining example of how to effect change with fine jewelry; Ruchi New York stones are sourced directly from ethically focused mines, and proceeds from each piece’s sale go toward a charity close to Kotahwala’s heart, the Global Fund for Widows, which financially empowers widows in developing and war-torn areas in the start-up of small businesses.

“Our partnership with Global Fund for Widows helped start The Sana Project, which has economically empowered war widows in the Kashmir region with traditional embroidery training and job placement. 100% of the widows received artisan cards from the government following their training, and 100% are working!” Kotahwala announced proudly to her party attendees.

In addition to her work with charity, Kotahwala, who wore a summery pale pink dress and accessorized with earrings that glittered with pink sapphires, admitted yet another way she enjoyed empowering women, and that is to buy their own jewelry. “They have earned it and deserve it!” she smiled. Can’t argue with that.
