Ruby Rose Says Goodbye to Her Beloved Hand Tattoos
Before Ruby Rose became a household name as Stella Carlin on Orange Is the New Black, fans obsessed over the androgynous model's self-produced short film Break Free, in which she washes away body makeup to reveal the many gorgeous tattoos (she stopped counting after 60!) covering her entire body.
But even though the actress clearly loves herself some body ink, I'd now like to ask for moment of silence for Ruby Rose's hand tattoos, because the actress has decided to remove them.
"I’m in the process of getting a few removed that get in the way of acting, because you can cover everything with makeup, but getting the creases and corners on hands can be difficult," Ruby explained at the Urban Decay x Basquiat launch Wednesday. "It’s been tough. I’ve started here [points to knuckles], but I’m constantly shooting, so I can’t get anything removed while I’m filming. Because if I had the tattoo at the beginning and don't at the end, [it's a problem]. But what we’ve been doing is covering them and putting new ones on, which has been fun as well."
She says the tattoo she regrets getting the most is the "tramp stamp" of a rose and Celtic design she got with her mom when she was 16 and describes as "very, very classy. Classic. Iconic. Some would say revolutionary," but that one's here to stay awhile longer. "I kept it because it’s a memory, and it’s fun, and I love it."
Rose, the face of Urban Decay's latest Basquiat-inspired collaboration, also described her many tattoos that pay homage to the late graffiti artist, like the crown on her chest, and a portrait and sketches on her arm.
"I have been a really huge Basquiat fan since I was a kid, " she explains. "As I grew up and better understood his mind, his way of thinking, and all the things he accomplished at such a young age, I became more and more inspired by his work and his existence on this planet ... The thing with Basquiat is that he knew himself. He knew what he wanted to do on this planet. He knew he wanted to do art. He believed in his art. He believed in it when nobody believed in it. And he knew that he wanted to send a message and make an imprint on this planet when he was here. And I know that I have those same kind of feelings and drive where it’s like, everything I do I want to have a purpose behind. I want to know that when I leave the Earth, I did something special and different, and I created something magical."
