Royalty from Around the World Send Condolences to King Mohammed VI of Morocco

A 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Atlas mountains in Morocco on Friday evening, killing at least 2,497 people as of the writing of this story. King Mohammed VI has declared three days of national mourning, as rescue efforts continue in the nation.

Around the globe, world leaders and royals have expressed messages of condolences to the Moroccan king. Here, read messages of condolences from monarchs:

King Charles III of the United Kingdom

On Saturday morning, King Charles wrote, "My wife and I were so deeply shocked and saddened to hear of the devastating loss of life and injuries caused by last night's earthquake in Morocco. We both have countless fond and special memories of our visits to your country and I cannot describe to you the depths of our sadness and sorrow at the suffering of all those affected by this appalling tragedy."

He continued, "We mourn the many lives cut short and send our heartfelt thoughts and condolences to all those who have lost loved ones. We great admire all those who bravely engaged in the challenging search and rescue efforts. Their selflessness and expertise is truly inspiring. I know that my Government stands ready to support and respond to your needs at the exceptionally difficult time."

King Felipe of Spain

King Felipe began his message to King Mohammed writing "dear brother." He continued, "I was devastated to receive the news of the violent earthquake that has affected the town of Ighil and the southwest of your country and that has caused a very high number of fatalities and injuries. I wish to inform you, in my name, that the government and the Spanish people, our deepest feeling of pain for the terrible consequences of this disaster as well as our deepest condolences."

Felipe added, "The Queen joins me in expressing our sincerest solidarity with the beloved Moroccan people and our support, appreciation, and closeness to the families of the victims in these times of grief and uncertainty, along with our best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery."

He signed the note "with great affection and a brotherly hug."

King Philippe of Belgium

King Philippe of Belgium wrote to King Mohammed VI directly, saying in part, "I wish to express to Your Majesty and the Moroccan people the solidarity and friendship of the Belgian authorities and people. The Queen and the entire Royal Family join me in expressing to Your Majesty and your family their deep sorrow at the human consequences of this event."

Queen Margrethe of Denmark

The Danish queen expressed her condolences to the Moroccan king. "Please accept my sincerest condolences, which I express following the earthquake the struck Morocco on September 8 and the terrible loss of life," she wrote. "I express my deep sympathy for all those affected, as well as for all the Moroccan people."

King Abdullah II of Jordan

"His Majesty King Abdullah II expresses condolences to King Mohammed VI of #Morocco over the victims of the earthquake, and directs the government to provide all the necessary support for Morocco," the Royal Hashemite Court shared on their social media.

On their website, the Court expanded further, "His Majesty King Abdullah II sent a message of condolence to his brother, His Majesty King Mohammed VI, King of the sisterly Kingdom of Morocco, for the victims of the earthquake, which struck a number of areas in the Al Haouz Province in Morocco, yesterday, Friday."

The royal court continued, "His Majesty affirmed that Jordan stands with the brothers in the Kingdom of Morocco in this painful incident, directing the government to provide all necessary assistance. In the telegram, in his name and on behalf of the people and government of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, His Majesty the King expressed his sincere condolences and sympathy to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, to the dear Moroccan people, and to the families of the victims of this affliction, and his wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured."

King Harald V of Norway

"I was deeply saddened to learn of the earthquake that caused such widespread destruction and claimed so many lives in Morocco," the Norwegian king wrote to King Mohammed VI. "On behalf of myself and the people of Norway, I send you my deepfelt condolences and ask you to convey my condolences and my sympathy to those bereaved, to those otherwise afflicted by this terrible natural disaster, and to the people of the Kingdom of Morocco."
