Update 3/29/22: Prince Philip's memorial service occurred this morning, attended by Queen Elizabeth. Her great-grandchildren Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Savannah and Isla Phillips, and Mia Tindall, joined their parents at the service. Prince Andrew, too, was in attendance.

Other royals who attended included Greece's Queen Anne-Marie, Crown Prince Pavlos, and Crown Princess Marie-Chantal; Prince Albert of Monaco, sans his wife Princess Charlene; and Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince of Bahrain.

Original, 3/25/22: When Queen Elizabeth's beloved husband Prince Philip passed away last year, his funeral services were altered because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Only 30 people were allowed to attend, and due to pandemic restrictions, guests who were not members of the same household had to sit six feet apart.

Last month, Buckingham Palace announced a Service of Thanksgiving for the life of Prince Philip, which will be held at Westminster Abbey on March 29, 2022. Prince Harry returned to the UK for Prince Philip's funeral in April last year, but he will not return for the service. His spokesperson said that he hopes to visit his grandmother the Queen as soon as possible.

As of this week, the Queen plans to attend. The Queen missed the Commonwealth Service Day earlier this month due to concerns surrounding her mobility. Yet, she was pictured at Windsor this week carrying out an engagement with a cane.

What members of the British royal family will attend Prince Philip's memorial?

Buckingham Palace confirmed "members of the royal family" will attend, but did not specify which ones. So while a guest list has not been officially announced, it is likely that all senior members of the British royal family will be in attendance, including Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, Princess Anne and her husband Vice Admiral Timothy Laurence, Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, and Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex.

It's unclear whether or not Prince Andrew will attend in the wake of settling his sexual assault case in the United States; he stepped down from royal duties in November 2019 but he did attend his father's funeral in April 2021.

The Queen's grandchildren, who are not working royals, and their spouses will also likely be in attendance, including Princess Beatrice and her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank, and Zara Tindall and her husband Mike Tindall, and Peter Philips.

Also at Prince Philip's funeral last year were Princess Margaret’s daughter, Lady Sarah Chatto, and her husband, Daniel Chatto, Prince Richard, the Duke of Gloucester, Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent, and Princess Alexandra.

All the European royals confirmed to attend Prince Philip's memorial service:

  • King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain

  • Princess Beatrix, King Willem-Alexander, and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands

  • King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium

  • Queen Margrethe of Denmark

  • King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden

  • Margareta, Custodian of the Crown of Romania and Prince Radu

Prince Philip was related to multiple royal families across Europe; he was born in Greece in 1921 into the Greek and Danish royal families, the son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg, who was a great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria. Before marrying Queen Elizabeth, he relinquished all his existing royal titles.

Also expected to attend are Prince Philip's surviving family members from Germany. Three of his relatives—Bernhard, Hereditary Prince of Baden; Donatus, Prince and Landgrave of Hesse; and Philipp, Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg—attended his funeral last year.

Will any non-royals attend the service?

Yes. In addition to members of the royal family, foreign royal families, and Prince Philip's family and friends, Buckingham Palace announced "the congregation will include over 500 representatives of The Duke of Edinburgh’s patronages and charities, reflecting the breadth of causes and charitable interests championed by His Royal Highness, and as a tribute to those who continue his work."

In addition, "representatives from UK Government, the Armed Forces and the Devolved Administrations, Realm High Commissioners, representatives of Overseas Territories, representatives from The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh’s Household, representatives from The Duke’s Regimental Affiliations in the UK and the Commonwealth, as well as the clergy and other faiths" will be in attendance.
