The Royal Wedding Playlist Is Now on Spotify: See Which Moments and Performances Are the Most Popular
The royal wedding may have come and gone over the past weekend, but its impact will be felt for months and years to come. Or, in the case of its influence on some Spotify playlists, in just the two days following Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s May 19 nuptials.
According to the music streaming service, the royal wedding has an enormous impact on what users are listening to. The Royal Wedding – The Official Album, which was released Saturday following the ceremony has already received over 100,000 streams globally so far.
Among the artists on the playlist, 19-year-old cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason was a standout with a 428 percent increase in streams globally as of Sunday.
At the ceremony, he performed Maria Theresia von Paradis’ Sicilienne, Gabriel Fauré’s Après un rêve and Franz Schubert’s “Ave Maria.” (While “Ave Maria” is a well-known classical tune, von Paradis is lesser known, perhaps best associated with Mozart).
Karen Gibson and The Kingdom Choir’s beautiful, rousing performance of “Stand By Me” (originally sung by Ben E. King), has proven to be the most popular track on the official album thus far; on Saturday, Spotify users sought out the original version as well, causing a 30 percent increase in streams of King’s “Stand By Me” globally.
On Sunday, it was revealed that Harry and Markle had their first dance in the most fun, fabulous way possible: to the tune of Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)”—perhaps not coincidentally, streams of the ‘80s hit jumped 15 percent globally.
