The Royal Family Reportedly Cannot Eat Garlic

My heart breaks for them.

Life in the royal family certainly has its perks, but the responsibility also comes with its set of rules. From guidelines on nail polish to hairstyles, there are a number of everyday items that life as a royal just doesn't always permit. Unfortunately, the list of forbidden items includes a food popular among chefs and breadstick fans around the world: garlic.

As pointed out by Glamour, Parker Bowles, the Duchess of Cornwall, shared the unfortunate news during a television appearance on MasterChef Australia. She said that "garlic is a no-no," explaining that fellow royals "always have to lay off the garlic" because their duties often require very public conversations. The reasoning does make sense, but as any fan of garlic knows, enjoying the delightful flavor requires one to keep a steady supply of minty fresh options available on standby for after eating.

Based on past reporting, it would appear that garlic has long been avoided in the castle. Former royal chef Darren McGrady told RecipesPlus in 2016 that Queen Elizabeth didn't permit the chefs to "serve anything with garlic or too much onions." Another former royal chef also once touched on the garlic ban, telling the National Post in 2016 that "they’re missing out on garlic, because at Buckingham Palace, you don’t cook with garlic. I suppose, in case you get the 'royal burp.'"

Although garlic might not make it on any royal menu soon, the family does seem to enjoy some delicious dishes. In fact, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's wedding included an extensive menu of tasty items and an extravagant cake. Perhaps they're doing just fine without the beloved spice, but I don't think I'd be able to live without my breadsticks...royal status or not.
