The Royal Family Reacts to Prince Philip's Death

Prince Philip has died at the age of 99. The Royal Family announced the Duke of Edinburgh's passing on Friday morning (April 9) with a statement shared to social media.

"It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh," the statement read. "His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle. The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss."

The Royal Family has put a holding page on their website in honor of the late Duke, where the statement is written alongside a photo of the prince smiling. Family members have rallied together in remembrance of Prince Philip.

Some family members are honoring Prince Philip with their social media avatar photos. The Royal Family Instagram account, as well as Kensington Royal (the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge) and Clarence House (Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles) have all replaced their profile pictures with black-and-white crests in tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh. All three accounts also posted the black-and-white photo of Prince Philip in accompaniment with the statement from the palace.

This morning, the announcement of Prince Philip's death was placed on the gates of Buckingham Palace as it is tradition in the family. However, according to royal reporter Omid Scobie, it will soon be removed to prevent drawing a crowd and the spread of Covid-19.

On Friday, Prince William and Kate Middleton shared the statement confirming Prince Philip's death on Kensington Palace's accounts, while Prince Harry and Meghan Markle paid tribute to him on their Archewell website, writing, "In loving memory of His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh, 1921-2021. Thank you for your service... you will be greatly missed."

The next day, the Royal Family's Instagram account honored the prince by sharing a sweet snippet from Queen Elizabeth's golden wedding anniversary speech in 1997. "He has, quite simply, been my strength and stay all these years, and I, and his whole family, and this and many other countries, owe him a debt greater than he would ever claim, or we shall ever know," she previously said in celebration of her husband's service.

Princess Eugenie wrote a sweet message promising Philip that she would "look after" Queen Elizabeth.

"Dearest Grandpa," she wrote on Instagram. "We all miss you. You would be so touched by all the tributes that have been shared with me the past few days. People remember sitting next to you at a dinner, or shaking your hand once, who remember you saying hello in passing, or remember how much their DofE award meant to them."

"Thank you for your dedication and love for us all," Eugenie added, "and especially Granny, who we will look after for you."

Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth wed in 1947, and since then, he has stood by the Queen's side during her long reign over six decades long. In August 2017, the Duke retired from official royal duties to enjoy a quieter life with fewer public appearances.

The royal is survived by his children: Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward. He has eight grandchildren: Charles's sons, Princes William and Harry; Anne's children, Zara Tindall and Peter Phillips; Andrew's daughters, Eugenie and Beatrice; and Edward's children, Louise and James.
