This Royal Family Christmas Card from 1939 Features a Young Queen Elizabeth II & Princess Margaret

Recently, we've been treated to Christmas cards from all our favorite royals, and in the spirit of the season, we decided to revisit this vintage card that was sent out almost 100 years ago.

Thanks to the Royal Collection Trust Instagram account, followers can view a letter from 1939 that features the late Queen Elizabeth II. In the vintage, black-and-white image, a 13-year-old Queen Elizabeth is seen posing with her younger sister, Princess Margaret.

In the snap, the two sisters are seen wearing matching pinstripe tops with scalloped peter pan collars tucked into skirts. The card included a message that read, “With best wishes for Christmas from Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret Rose.” Next to the inscription are drawings of baby cherubs looking at shields that include the Union Jack and a flag for the French Republic (République française).

Lately, the royal family has been showing their holiday cheer on social media.

In the past couple weeks, the official account has posted snaps of royal residences covered in snow, as well as snaps showing off their holiday decor.

At the beginning of this month, we got a glimpse of the stunning 20-foot tree that is sitting in St George’s Hall in Windsor Castle. “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!” the caption read. “At Windsor Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the decorations are up and ready for visitors to enjoy.”

While the Royal Collection Trust shared this slice of history as a part of a virtual “advent calendar” in 2021, they posted another vintage card this year, which was sent out in 1938.

The caption said: “Have you sent Christmas cards this year? During the 1930s the Royal Family often used their favourite Marcus Adams photographs on their cards. This Christmas card features a portrait taken at Buckingham Palace in December 1938 of King George VI with his wife and daughters. Standing beside Princess Elizabeth is the first royal corgi, Dookie.”

These throwbacks keep the spirit of Queen Elizabeth alive during a season that was always one of her favorites.
