The Royal Family Addresses Queen Elizabeth's 'The Crown' Stamp Scene

Fans of The Crown got a treat at the opening of Season 3, when the queen, now played by Olivia Colman, was presented with new stamp designs. To show the passing of time, the new design was updated with Colman's profile (the old stamp, of course, featured previous actress Claire Foy).

The official royal family Twitter account posted about the process behind creating the queen's iconic portrait for the nation's stamps. The caption said, "These photographs taken by Dorothy Wilding, of Her Majesty in 1952, were used as the basis of The Queen's image on postage stamps from 1953 until 1971. In two sittings, photographer Wilding took 59 images of The Queen. @RCT."

A subsequent tweet read, "Arnold Machin's effigy of The Queen, which has featured on UK stamps since 1967, is widely considered to be one of the most reproduced and iconic images in the world. It has been reprinted an estimated 220 billion times, in more than 130 different colours."

Town & Country noted that the royal family's tweets coincided with Queen Elizabeth's visit to "the new headquarters of the Royal Philatelic society, which also runs a postal museum, so these postal tweets have an alibi." But it's impossible not to think that they're also a nod to one of The Crown Season 3's most iconic moments.
