The Royal Baby's Birth Chart, as Interpreted by an Astrologer

Today, Britain’s royal family welcomed its newest member — and the first who has a shot at getting dual U.K. and U.S. citizenship. We don't know the baby's name yet, but we do know the precise time and location of the littlest royal's birth: The first child of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle (or the Duke and Duchess of Sussex) was born May 6 at 5:26 a.m., in Windsor, England. But what does that mean astrologically, aside from the fact that his zodiac sign is Taurus?

Of course, astrology is only one component that makes up a person — everyone lives out their chart in different ways, after all — but similarities, also known as chart signatures, often run in families. The Windsors have strong chart signatures, as does Meghan Markle: Her energy (and that of a particular grandmother) is all over her son’s chart. Here’s a peek at the birth chart of the royal baby, and how his astrological energy will interplay with the rest of the family.

The Royal Baby's Birth Chart: Taurus Energy Is Royal Energy

Though Leos are often called the kings of the zodiac, royalty is nothing if not stability and tradition — the stuff that fixed earth energy is made of. Taurus is ruled by Venus, the planet of beauty and material value, and Tauruses love their luxuries. And Taurus energy is strong with the Windsors.

The people who plant, who nurture, who wait for seeds to grow, the earthy folks who know that things take time and are happy to sit in the sun and wait for the fruit to come up: These are Taurus folks. Queen Elizabeth II is a Taurus (her birthday was April 21). Prince Charles has a powerful Taurus moon, indicating that this energy is what emotionally fulfills him; Prince Harry has a Taurus moon, too. The late Princess Diana had a supercharged Taurus Venus, which she passed on to Prince William. This family runs on Taurus energy. No wonder they have staying power.

Not only is Harry and Meghan’s firstborn son a Taurus sun, he’s also a Taurus rising, with his sun very close to his ascendant. If we think of our sun sign as what we are born to do and our rising sign as our operating system, or how we do our sun sign, then we can see that sun/rising people have a particularly strong fusion in how they exist in the world. Plus, the little one has Uranus, the planet of change and disruption, hanging out near his ascendant, too, so perhaps he’ll be part of disruption in the monarchy. Certainly, with a divorcee American mom and parents who are already disrupting how they do the system, he’s been part of a sea change even before his birth.

Mercury Placement and How It Affects Communication

The baby shares his mom’s passionate, fiery communication style. Mercury, the planet of ideas, is all about how we communicate. Meghan’s Mercury is in Leo; the baby’s is in Aries. When two people have Mercury in the same element, there is a shared level of understanding: They think, process information, and express ideas in similar ways. As the little one grows up, it will be interesting to see how this unfolds.

This also might have something to do with why Meghan and the Queen have seemed so friendly, and why the matriarch may be particularly fond of her. Queen Elizabeth also has a fiery Aries Mercury, and she’s known for her quick asides.

The Moon and Emotional Legacy

In spite of all that Taurus energy from dad, the baby has a lot in common with mom — and also with Harry’s late mom, the beloved Princess Diana.

The moon tells us a lot about emotional inheritance and family legacy in a chart, including what sign it’s in and where it’s placed. The moon is all about emotions, and this baby’s Gemini moon indicates emotions that show themselves through conversation and curiosity. Mom Meghan has an air sign moon (Libra); so did grandmother Diana (Aquarius). It will be fascinating to see how the baby grows up and into their Gemini moon, and which family members they are most likened to.

Familial Inheritance — and the Royal Baby's Future

In astrology, we look to a few parts of the chart to indicate parental relationships, notably the zone of family and roots at the base of someone’s birth chart. Meghan is a Leo sun, and Leo governs the zone at the base of her son’s chart, showing what a strong role she’ll have in forming his sense of home, roots, and tradition — and indicating the new path forward she and Harry both are forging in their new family.
