Just as she did for Prince George and Princess Charlotte, Kate Middleton has stepped out of the hospital just hours after giving birth, introducing the family’s new son to the press outside St. Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London, alongside Prince William. Kate wore a red long-sleeved dress with a lace collar, holding the baby, who was wearing a white hat on his head, in a white blanket. William, who had been spotted outside the hospital earlier as he brought George and Charlotte in to meet their new brother, wore a blue jacket. The couple posed for just a few minutes for photographers before returning inside the hospital. They reemerged moments later with the baby in his car seat, and William drove the couple and their new son away from the hospital.
Over the years, the Lindo Wing exit has become nearly as anticipated as the actual event of the birth. When both William and Prince Harry were born, Diana posed with her sons for the journalists waiting outside. And, at the births of both George and Charlotte, curious and dutiful reporters waited outside the Lindo Wing to get their first glimpse of the young royals.
But after that initial glimpse, William and Kate traditionally stay pretty private. After Charlotte’s birth in 2015, William and Kate moved to Anmer Hall in Norfolk. The first official photograph of the young royal was not released until early June of 2015, more than one month after her birth.
“It’s no secret that William doesn’t like the media intrusion into his life, and in the country he can escape,” a family friend told Vanity Fair’s Katie Nicholl in 2016. “The Queen and the Prince of Wales have given their blessing for William to live this life, and William is very grateful. It’s enabling him and Kate to raise their family in a way that’s as close to ordinary as they can get.”
