Britain has a new Prince! The Duchess of Cambridge gave birth to a baby boy this morning at St Mary's Hospital in London, Kensington Palace has announced. The statement was shared via social media this morning, and will also be posted an easel outside Buckingham Palace.

"Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 1101hrs." reads a statement from Kensington Palace.

Both mother and baby are reportedly in good health following the delivery, and the little boy weighed in at 8 pounds 7 oz. The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth.

The child, whose name has yet to be released, is now fifth in line to the British throne, bumping Prince Harry (and everyone else) down a spot.

Oddsmakers have been predicting Mary, Alice, or Victoria for a girl and Arthur, Albert, or James for a boy, but it will likely be a few days before the name is officially announced. In 2013, Prince George's name was announced two days after his birth.

While there is no specific reasoning why the royal family will delay in sharing the little one's name, royals expert Victoria Arbiter shed some light on the tradition.

"The reasoning is perhaps two fold. On one hand there's a desire to inform the families before a public declaration is made and any new parent appreciates having a little private time to get to know their new addition before the onslaught of announcements," she tells Town & Country via email.

"Royals, however, also have to consider the great responsibility in naming a new member of the family and I expect they want to be a hundred percent certain of their choice before announcing the name and sealing the baby's place in history."

The new royal baby marks the seventh great-grandchild for Queen Elizabeth.
