While the streets may still be a sea of puffer jacket sameness, on the fall runways designers have been pushing statement outerwear, with a surfeit of mega shearlings (LaQuan Smith), faux furs (Dries Van Noten’s from Steiff), and refreshingly, tailoring.

Enter The Row, where Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen presented part two to their fall collection that debuted in their showroom during couture week. For the runway, they obsessed over outerwear, with elegant layers of cashmere luxe, starting with a camel cape coat winding round and round to a scarf at the neck, so thoroughly swaddling the body that face and handbag were the only things peeking out.

A masculine mushroom-hued overcoat was elevated with a scarf tied flourish, while an oversize, sage green style had a dramatic shoulder to side sash. And it wouldn’t matter what you wore underneath — if anything — a lipstick red coat with padded shoulders and relaxed sleeves, clutch closed with a matching pair of gloves.

They extended their outerwear impulse to a putty-colored bustier bias dress with angled hem, layered over a straight maxiskirt, and a sculptural cocooning off shoulder gown worn with a beanie for luxe slope-side nights.

The designer gave the same loving care to tailoring that could be admired from all angles in the mirrored room, with a strong shouldered blazer sliced down the back and held together by a stitch at the waist, and belted with a thin cord of leather. Another oversized style had a sculptural shoulder blade panel adding interest to a suit with the season’s must-have trouser skirt.

It made for a gorgeous lineup that pushed the sisters in more of a conceptual direction, along with delivering on the quiet elegance that has their business booming more than ever.
