Rooney Mara Is Pregnant With Her Second Child With Joaquin Phoenix

Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix are expecting their second child!

Mara announced her pregnancy last Friday, at the premiere of La Cocina at the Berlin Film Festival in Germany, where she walked the red carpet in a strapless black gown with a voluminous skirt. Dressed in the sophisticated eveningwear, she cupped her hands beneath her stomach to cradle her growing baby bump.

Mara and Phoenix welcomed their first child, a boy named River, in September 2020. The couple has been romantically linked since 2016, but the actors have chosen to keep their relationship largely out of the limelight.

In a May 2021 letter released in partnership with animal protection organization Farm Sanctuary, Mara gave rare insight into her and Phoenix's newfound life as parents.

“As a new mom, Mother’s Day has taken on a special meaning this year,” she wrote at the time. “Raising our baby, River, has opened my heart to a whole new life filled with hope and more determination than ever to create a kinder and more sustainable world.”

She continued, “I feel so fortunate to be able to nurture my son in all of the ways that nature intended, and I wish all mothers in the animal kingdom could experience that sacred maternal bond with their young, devoid of exploitation by humans.”

She also opened up about raising River in a “creative household” during a guest appearance on the LaunchLeft podcast last year.

“It feels like a creative household, we're constantly talking about creative things,” she revealed. “It doesn't feel like a two-actor house because I didn't work for the first three and a half years we were together. Basically, since we've been together, I only worked one or two times and one was really small and short.”
