How Can You Get a Room at New York's Next Great Escape?
When Wildflower Farms, a new resort on 140 bucolic acres in New York’s Hudson Valley, opens in the autumn of this year, it’ll have all of the high-end touches you’d expect from a property that’s a member of the Auberge Resorts Collection—which also includes Auberge du Soleil in the Napa Valley, Hotel Jerome in Aspen, and the Mayflower Inn and Spa in Washington, Conn.—including a 9,000-square-foot spa with an indoor saltwater pool, a destination, farm-based restaurant, and 65 freestanding guest accommodations (ranging from cabins and cottages to suites) designed by architects Electric Bowery and designer Ward and Gray. But the real point of the property, which is now taking reservations for its October 1 opening, is getting outdoors.
“We started the project about seven years ago because we felt strongly that there were other New Yorkers looking to get out of the city for a more nature-immersive experience,” says Phillip Rapoport, who owns the property with his wife, Kristin Rapoport. “We started visiting the area because of an interest in hiking and rock climbing and grew to love the world-class beauty and amazing activities in the Hudson Valley. We wanted to share that with New Yorkers who’d been going out West, to Colorado or California, to find similar experiences.”
Wildflower Farms is a new build, which is unique for the region, and features design elements intended to make the great outdoors feel as close as possible. “We spent years walking the property and finding the best places to highlight the natural landscape,” Rapoport says. “Now, every guest cabin and building has direct access to the outside, and there’s a real connection between the indoors and outdoors in all seasons.”

And while some travelers might still have summer vacations on their mind, it’s decidedly not too early to think about fall upstate. “October is one of the best months in the region; it’s when the leaves start changing, the temperatures begin dropping, and it’s the best time of year to get outside,” Rapoport says. “It’s when the area’s firing on all cylinders.”
