Ever since summer came to a close, I have been on an ongoing mission to revamp my entire fall outerwear collection. Like many of you, I hadn't done a major overhaul of my closet since before the pandemic for obvious reasons. But when the weather began to drop below 65 degrees and wearing a layer became a necessity again, it was time to toss out all my old coats and jackets and start fresh. I have since added several new styles to my collection, but there's one piece in particular that has quickly become a favorite and actually makes me want to step outside as the weather gets cooler: J.Crew's cult-classic Quilted Barn Jacket.

Of course, this shouldn't come as a surprise since this specific padded number has been a style staple of the heritage brand for nearly four decades. And it's not hard to see why. It has all the classic details of a quilted jacket, with all-over criss-cross stitching and a brown corduroy collar and cuffs, plus a lightweight cotton fabric that does the trick at keeping me warm and comfortable on gustier days. The piece has some new contemporary finishing touches, too, like adjustable tabs with snaps at the back that define the waist and ensure a more fitted silhouette.

I also love the utilitarian component of the quilted jacket: It has four big pockets that can perfectly hold my keys, credit card case, phone, and lip balm, and still have space for other daily tchotchkes. A shocking fact? I no longer carry a bag when I am wearing this piece because it is so well-designed. Running errands is truly a breeze now.

Last but not least, the J.Crew topper always manages to make every casual fit I wear look elevated. When layered over a striped top (or a white button down shirt) and jeans, I instantly feel polished and put together, and there's no better feeling than that. Being that these perfectly crisp, autumn days are numbered, I'd recommend snagging one for yourself fast so you can also get a lot of use out of it before the temps drop even more. But if you don't get to wear it in time... there's always next season since this is a piece that will never go out of style.
