The Rookie aired its season 5 finale a little over a month ago, and it left fans on a cliffhanger no one was prepared for yet. What's more, it seems like viewers already have suspicions about how said shocking moment will play out in season 6.

At the end of the latest installment, folks saw rookies Celina Juarez (Lisseth Chavez) and Aaron Thorsen (Tru Valentino) on their way home from a Dungeons and Dragons game night when they hear noises coming from a back alley. As they go check on it, the two get attacked by a group of gunmen on an unknown mission to kill them. One of the accomplices ends up shooting Thorsen while Juarez gets knocked out by another.

Eventually the duo ends up in the hospital, with Thorsen in a coma after going into surgery. Understandably, Juarez feels guilty by the unexpected ambush, believing that she was the one who caused Thorsen to get hurt.

"I should've called it in," she told her training officer John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) from her bed. "The second we heard something, I shouldn't have left his side."

Despite Thorsen making it through a successful surgery, the last minutes of the episode showed a code blue being issued from his hospital room. As doctors and nurses flooded in, the screen faded to black. With the young rookie's fate up in the air, many fans took to the internet to share their theories on Thorsen's situation.

Unsurprisingly, many viewers contemplated the possibility of the character being killed off. But others made the argument why this may not happen for several reasons. Among them being how this event could add to the storyline.

"They're not gonna kill off Thorsen, I highly doubt it. But he'll be gone from the force for awhile, so his rehab will be an interesting subplot," Reddit user @Kwilly462 wrote. "I hope Aaron lives and we get to see more of him Celina being friends outside of work," user @TheDreamingFireFly chimed in about a potential bonding moment.

In a surprising twist, some folks even theorized why Throsen got hurt in the first place.

"I found the problem — whenever Angela and Wesley have a baby a cop gets severely injured/killed," user @JayCee1321 commented. "If they kill off Thorsen, I’m gonna riot... we lost one while Angela (Lopez) [Alyssa Diaz] was pregnant, and now another? She’s going to have PTSD or something about having kids," user @mandoysmoysoy added, referencing late rookie Jackson West (Titus Makin) in season 4.

By the sounds of it, The Rookie season 6 will likely continue this storyline, given that Thorsen's shooting was stage one of what appears to be a greater plot threatening to hurt all the officers of Mid-Wilshire. What's more, viewers wouldn't be happy to see yet another rookie killed off so early in his career. They were devastated after Jackson was murdered in season 4 after being kidnapped from Angela's wedding to Wesley Evers (Shawn Ashmore), and the way the writers are setting up Thorsen's plot, folks wouldn't be too thrilled to see a repeat so soon.

As far as when dedicated TV goers will see this play out, the WGA writers' strike is still happening. With The Rookie is not currently on ABC's fall 2023 primetime schedule, fans will have to wait until at least winter 2024 before witnessing a resolution.

"I’m terrified they’re going to leave us with a cliffhanger with multiple lives hanging and then with the strike it could be 5-6 months before we get resolution," user @Kbye80 wrote, emphasizing this thought entirely.

While it's unclear how Thorsen will fare come season 6, at least we know folks want him alive after all he went through. Guess we better stay tuned on what's to come...
