Ronnie's Bad Attitude Is a New Dad Red Flag

The lovable ("lovable") Jersey Shore gang has descended upon Miami to remind everyone just how drunk they can get (spoiler alert: VERY). You’d think the majority of them having kids would slow them down, but no. This cast has actually developed a heightened ability to party like trash people. It's awe-inspiring. And I'm not here to judge them for it. They're adults, and to an extent they're just doing their jobs as television stars.

I am here, however, to offer some unsolicited advice to new dad Ronnie Ortiz-Magro: Stop acting like you have no control over whether you're a good guy.

When the Jersey Shore Family Vacation premiere was shot, Ron was two months out from the birth of his daughter with girlfriend Jen Harley. Breaking the news to Pauly D, a father himself, Ron said, "I'll always be a shitty husband, a shitty boyfriend, but I'll never be a shitty father." As if part of being a good father is not at least trying to be a good man to the woman who gave birth to your kid.

It’s one thing to constantly fuck up your relationships and tearfully apologize each time. It’s another to use that track record as excuse not to even make an attempt moving forward. Even if you’re no longer romantically with the mother of your child, unless she’s completely out of the picture, you’re both likely pouring your heart and soul into that kid. To wash your hands of the idea that you could ever be kind to her is losing half the battle. It’s like going through high school - you might be bad at math and science and great at English. But if you just give up and fail two-thirds of your classes, you won’t graduate no matter how great at your book reports were. You don’t have to be perfect, but you need to put in the effort. Especially because your kid is going to look to you as a role model. If you’re constantly treating other people like garbage and falling back on the excuse that "it’s just the way I am," a kid will make a note of it.
