May 1—Mural part of larger project to put kid's train in downtown Ironton
If you've been around the splash park in Ironton, you may have noticed a new mural on the shipping container.
It was part of a bigger project that Ironton aLive did and they are doing it conjunction with the Friends of Ironton and Community Action Organization.
Sam Heighton, the executive director of Ironton aLive, said they volunteered to have it the container painted and had Elias Reynolds do the artwork. He is going to paint the other two shipping containers on the site and is the same artist that is redoing the murals of the Waterloo Wonders and the Col.William Lambert on the Ironton floodwall.
The containers are part of a planned project by the Friends of Ironton. They have a small train that can ferry kids around.
"The containers will be tunnels for the train and also storage for the train," Heighton said.
The train consists of the engine and three cars for kids and is in storage currently.
"It is going to be nice when the whole thing is put together," Heighton said.
There is also an old train caboose that will eventually be used as a party room for things like children's birthdays.
There isn't a time frame for the whole train project to be completed and open to the public yet.
The container mural project is being spearheaded by Ironton aLive's Christy Phillips.
The mission of Ironton aLive is to bring tourism into the town and Heighton believes that things like the murals could help with things like economic development.
