Rogue Pig Spotted Sprinting Past Skiers At French Resort

Earlier this month, La Sotizerie shared a bizarre video featuring one wild boar charging past a crowd of confused skiers.

The boar was spotted at Saint Lary Soulan, a French ski resort.

After a closer look, though, the sight of a wild boar at a French ski resort isn't quite as bizarre as it might seem.

Wild boar are everywhere in France. According to The Connexion—a French-English newspaper—wild boar populations have exploded throughout the nation over the years. The newspaper reports that there are now between one and two million wild boar in France, stating that a decrease in predators, climate change, and expanding boar habitats are two potential reasons for the population uptick.

But wild boar on the slopes of a ski resort? That's still outrageous, right?

Not necessarily. In an interview with CNRS News, ecologist and geographer Raphaël Mathevet—who studied the relationship between wild boar and humans—explained that wild boar can occupy habitats as high as 11,000 feet, meaning they have the aptitude to live near ski slopes. "The wild boar is an omnivorous animal with a tremendous capacity to adapt," says Mathevet.

The wild boar sighting at Saint Lary Soulan recalls a 2019 internet meme I'd completely forgotten about until now. If you know what I'm talking about, enjoy the chuckle and reminisce on one of the internet's finest moments.
