Rodan + Fields, best known for its science-backed skincare, is bringing its innovative formulas to a new category: haircare. Dermatologists Katie Rodan and Kathy Fields, who also founded Proactiv, decided to enter into the hair sector now because “the time was right,” Fields tells BAZAAR.com. “We saw an opportunity to approach hair by staying true to our heritage and getting to the root of the problem to create healthier-looking, stronger, more beautiful hair,” Rodan explains. “After all, scalp is skin, and we know skin.”

The brand aims to bring skincare-inspired formulas to your scalp and hair, and even carried over a few of the powerhouse ingredients, like its proprietary RF TriEnergy Complex. “We founded Rodan + Fields to give people access to dermatology-inspired products that provide visible results,” Rodan says. “Our process in developing Rodan + Fields haircare is no different.”

When formulating the collection, the brand enlisted the help of hair experts, including celebrity hairstylist Bridget Brager, whose regulars include Kate Bosworth and Priyanka Chopra. The eight-piece line includes two collections: Smooth+ and Volume+. Both lines feature the brand’s RF TriEnergy Complex, which helps strengthen the scalp’s skin barrier and boost scalp energy by up to 200 percent. “For our first step into the hair category, we wanted to address the most common hair concerns, and our regimens address approximately 80 percent of consumer’s hair concerns,” Fields adds. “We also aimed to fill a major gap in the haircare world: to provide immediate and long-term benefits to the hair to maximize all-day performance, and we feel our innovations give the best of both worlds.”

At the helm of each range is a targeted sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner set. The Smooth+ line homes in on treating dry, frizzy hair and replenishes with the use of hyaluronic acid. Volume+ promotes fuller, thicker hair from the root, courtesy of plumping ingredients like ceramides and acetyl glutamine. There’s also a smoothing oil treatment with thermal protection and a densifying treatment.

The brand offers two new stylers, too: Refresh+ Dry Shampoo and Define+ Curl Cream. Staying true to its heritage of creating formulas that benefit the skin, Rodan + Fields took on haircare challenges like creating a dry shampoo that doesn’t cause buildup on the scalp, which often does more harm than good. “We designed this dry shampoo to have an ultra-fine mist that balances the scalp while adding volume and fullness, and absorbing oil and sweat,” Brager says. “We took it one step further by adding nourishing ingredients like chamomile to soothe the scalp and rice starch to absorb excess oil.”

The best part? You can mix and match the products depending on your daily needs. I was able to test the collection prior to its launch with Brager, who used the Smooth+ shampoo and conditioner on me, as well as the Densifying+ Treatment and Defrizzing Oil to boost fullness and add shine, respectively. The result: soft, glossy hair with mega volume.

When using the line at home, I reach for the Smooth+ set—especially the oil—to protect my ends from heat damage, and the dry shampoo to extend my wash days. The Smooth+ line boasts a light floral scent of freesia and ylang-ylang with sandalwood, which I love. Between washes, the dry shampoo leaves my hair with an addictive fresh citrus fragrance, featuring fruity notes along with amber and musk.
