The Rockwell House is a historic home with a modern twist
For those who want to vacation in a historic home with modern comforts and conveniences, head to the Rockwell House in Milledgeville, Georgia.
Built in 1838, the 5-bedroom, 7,000-square-foot Federal-style mansion sits on 12 acres of land, and is surrounded by stunning towering trees and lovely landscaping. The picturesque environment and sizable home makes the Rockwell House the perfect venue to host an event or wedding.
Owner Will Walker begins the tour of the vacation home at the front door, where upon walking in, guests will drop their jaws at the gorgeous elliptical staircase that floats up through the house.
From the entryway, Will heads into the twin parlors, which are used today for what they would have been used for historically: parties and events. Each parlor has a fireplace, one of which still has its original marble mantel, while the other has a wood replica.
The parlors flow naturally into the kitchen. “We wanted to design a space that felt modern, but that fit with the historic house,” Will tells In The Know. “We chose colors and materials that look like they might be old,” says Will of the mostly white kitchen with flashes of gold hardware. “We didn’t want to create a false sense of history, but we did not want a trendy kitchen that looked like it was right out of 2020.”
Next to the kitchen is one of Will’s favorite rooms: the library. The walls are painted a dark “moody” green to help convey that this is a room for winding down in. “This room I think is best enjoyed right after dinner when it’s dark in here,” says Will. “You have the chandelier dimmed down. It’s a great place to enjoy a drink or to watch a movie.”
Off the library is the “coveted, singular bedroom” on the main floor which offers a large bed, wardrobe, and sitting area where guests can easily curl up with a book or enjoy their morning coffee. Will shares that this bedroom is one of the most desirable in the house because whoever sleeps there gets to climb the fewest stairs.
Beyond the main floor bedroom is the massive dining room. A crystal chandelier hangs over the large, wood 10-person dining table, but Will notes that the room is big enough to host several smaller dining tables, meaning the house can offer a seated dinner for up to 70 people.
While the main floor is where the party’s at, guests can retire to any of the four bedrooms upstairs. Each bedroom shows off its original hardwood flooring, and has space for a large bed and sitting area. However, one room is set up for kids with two smaller beds and a pull-out couch. None of the rooms have built-in closets, but each room has a large antique wardrobe “which is just as good,” says Will.
Also on the bedroom floor is a staircase that leads to the attic. “I can’t tell you what’s up there because it’s top secret,” says Will mysteriously. “You’ll have to come see it for yourself.”
