Robitussin Cough Syrups Have Been Recalled
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that Haleon, distributor of Robitussin cough syrup, issued a recall on two adult cough syrups.
Eight lots of Robitussin Honey CF Max Day Adult and Robitussin Honey CF Max Nighttime Adult were recalled over potential microbial contamination.
In immunocompromised individuals, contamination could potentially lead to life-threatening fungal infection.
On January 24, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that Haleon, the distributor of Robitussin cough syrup, issued a voluntary recall of eight lots of Robitussin Honey CF Max Day Adult and Robitussin Honey CF Max Nighttime Adult medications due to potential microbial contamination. If you have used any recalled product, the FDA and Haleon advise stopping consumption immediately and contacting your doctor if any adverse reactions occur.
“In immunocompromised individuals, the use of the affected product could potentially result in severe or life-threatening adverse events such as fungemia or disseminated fungal infection,” the recall reads. In non-immunocompromised people, life-threatening infections are not likely to occur, it adds, however, “the occurrence of an infection that may necessitate medical intervention cannot be completely ruled out.”
To date, Haleon has not received any reports of adverse events related to the recall.
Fungemia, also called Candidemia or Candidiasis, is defined as the presence of Candida, a species of yeast, in the blood, per the National Library of Medicine. It’s the most common fungal bloodstream infection, and the fourth most common bloodstream infection seen in the ICU, with upwards of a 50% mortality rate, according to some studies, as it can spread to major organs if left untreated.
The Robitussin bottles affected have expiration dates through 2025 and 2026—the specific lot numbers include:

Robitussin Honey CF Max Day Adult 8oz Lots: T08730 (expiration: May 31, 2025), T08731 (expiration: May 31, 2025), T08732 (expiration: May 31, 2025), T08733 (expiration: May 31, 2025), T10808 (expiration Sept. 30, 2025)
Robitussin Honey CF Max NT Adult 8oz Lots: T08740 (June 30, 2026), T08742 (June 30, 2026)
The elderly and very young people are most likely to experience complications from fungemia. Symptoms include fever and chills that don’t improve after antibiotic treatment, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which makes the infection particularly tricky to catch and manage.
Robitussin Honey CF Max Day and Nighttime are cough syrups meant to bring temporary relief from symptoms of cold or flu, hay fever, or other respiratory allergies.
