Robitussin Cough Syrup Recalled Due to Microbial Contamination

Robitussin Honey CF Max Day Adult and Robitussin Honey CF Max Nighttime Adult have been recalled

Two types of the popular cough syrup brand, Robitussin, are being recalled due to potentially life-threatening events for some individuals.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, via the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Haleon, the consumer healthcare company that produces the Robitussin, announced a voluntary nationwide recall of Robitussin Honey CF Max Day Adult and Robitussin Honey CF Max Nighttime Adult with expiration dates through 2025 and 2026 due to microbial contamination.

"In immunocompromised individuals, the use of the affected product could potentially result in severe or life-threatening adverse events such as fungemia or disseminated fungal infection," Haleon said, per the FDA.

The company added, "In non-immunocompromised consumers, the population most likely to use the product, life-threatening infections are not likely to occur. However, the occurrence of an infection that may necessitate medical intervention cannot be completely ruled out."

According to the National Library of Medicine, fungemia — also called fungemia candidiasis — refers to the presence of the yeast species Candida in the bloodstream. It's the most common fungal bloodstream infection and has a fatality rate as high as 50%. Elderly people are particularly vulnerable to fungemia.

Symptoms can be as simple as chills, shivering and fever or as extreme as septic shock, per the National Library of Medicine.

Patients with fungemia may experience a prolonged severe illness that requires an ICU stay. In extreme cases, abdominal surgery or an organ transplant is required.

According to Haleon, the company hasn't received any reports of adverse events related to the recalled products.

"Consumers that have purchased the product listed should stop consumption immediately," Haleon said, per the FDA, adding that anyone has consumed the product and experienced symptoms was advised to contact a doctor immediately.

Robitussin Honey CF Max Day and Nighttime are cough syrups that provide consumers with temporary relief from cold and flu symptoms, allergy symptoms and hay fever symptoms.
