WATCH: Robert Redford's Final Film Is Coming to Theaters This Month

Have we got a movie recommendation for you! It’s called The Old Man & the Gun, and it’s based on the true story of bank robber Forrest Tucker, a career criminal who pulled off a series of heists and escaped from San Quentin State Prison at 70 years old. It’s directed by David Lowery (A Ghost Story, Pete’s Dragon) and also features Tika Sumpter (Southside with You, Ride Along), Sissy Spacek (Carrie, Coal Miner’s Daughter), Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon, The Color Purple), and Tom Waits (Bram Stoker’s Dracula, The Outsiders).

It’s rumored to be the last film in which Redford will appear. In August, Redford told Entertainment Weekly, “Never say never, but I pretty well concluded that this would be it for me in terms of acting, and [I’ll] move towards retirement after this ’cause I’ve been doing it since I was 21. I thought, Well, that’s enough. And why not go out with something that’s very upbeat and positive?”

While he got his start in television appearing in guest-starring roles on episodes of Maverick, Perry Mason, and The Twilight Zone, at 82, Redford can now look back on decades of success in the movie business as an actor, producer, and director. He starred in classic films such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), The Way We Were (1973), The Sting (1973), All the President’s Men (1976), The Natural (1984), and Out of Africa (1985). He garnered accolades in recent years as well, including a Golden Globe nomination for his performance in 2013’s All Is Lost. He also directed eight films, including the Academy Award-winning Ordinary People (1980), A River Runs Through It (1992), Quiz Show (1994), and The Horse Whisperer (1998).

Why did Redford choose this film to be his last on-camera venture? In the same interview, the actor told EW, “The thing that really got me about [Tucker]—which I hope the film shows— is he robbed 17 banks and he got caught 17 times and went to prison 17 times. But he also escaped 17 times. So it made me wonder: I wonder if he was not averse to getting caught so he that could enjoy the real thrill of his life, which is to escape?”

The Old Man & the Gun will be released on September 28, 2018.
