Eighty-year-old Robert De Niro is expressing how he really feels about being a dad to an infant — and it’s so rooted in misogyny and toxic masculinity that we can’t help but cringe. The actor’s recent quotes are extremely reminiscent of a few memorable quotes from Donald Trump on parenting, which is unfortunate considering De Niro is vehemently outspoken about his distaste for the indicted former president.

During an interview recently published by The Guardian, the movie star was asked how parenting was going, as he welcomed a daughter with his girlfriend Tiffany Chen in April 2023. “It’s going okay,” De Niro said, making a face that suggested it might be somewhere south of “okay.”

The Godfather actor added, “It doesn’t get easier. It is what it is. It’s okay.” He admitted, “I mean, I don’t do the heavy lifting. I’m there, I support my girlfriend. But she does the work. And we have help, which is so important.” No shame in having help, but the “she does the work” comment is sending us. It’s just such a tired take that women are somehow naturally obligated to manage the full brunt of parenthood while men have zero responsibility.

When asked if he enjoys being a dad, De Niro answered, “Of course I do.” But like, as long as it doesn’t involve any of “the work?” He was asked what he specifically enjoys, and the Meet the Fockers star ironically said, “All of it!”

The actor continued to explain he has a different relationship with each of his kids based on their ages, which makes sense. In addition to his 6-month-old daughter Gia, De Niro is father to six children. He has a daughter, Helen Grace, 11, and a son, Elliot, 24, whom he shares with his ex-wife Grace Hightower. The Hollywood icon welcomed twin sons Julian and Aaron, 27, with his ex-girlfriend Toukie Smith. And, from his first marriage to Diahnne Abbott, De Niro has a daughter, Drena, 52, and a son, Raphael, 46.

He told The Guardian, “With a baby it’s different than with my 11-year-old. My adult children. My grandchildren. It’s all different.” De Niro added, “I don’t talk to the adult children the way I talk to my baby, or the way I speak to my 11-year-old, though she’s pretty smart.”

In 2005, Trump shared a few of his own hot takes on parenting, though his were even more misogynistic. During an appearance on the Opie and Anthony show in 2005, per Fortune, the television personality said, “There’s a lot of women out there that demand that the husband act like the wife and you know there’s a lot of husbands that listen to that.” He added, “I’m really like a great father but certain things you do and certain things you don’t. It’s just not for me.” Sounds “really like a great father” to us, for sure.

The same year during an interview with Howard Stern, Trump stated, “I mean, I won’t do anything to take care of them. I’ll supply funds and she’ll take care of the kids. It’s not like I’m gonna be walking the kids down Central Park.” The dad of five continued, “Marla used to say, ‘I can’t believe you’re not walking Tiffany down the street,’ you know in a carriage. Right, I’m gonna be walking down Fifth Avenue with a baby in a carriage.” What a charmer! We’re so tired of saying it, but men: if you agree that parenting is “women’s work”, do better.
