As someone who’s chronically online (and spends a despondent amount of time looking at screens), I don’t always get a good night’s sleep. On most nights, I average six to seven hours—less than most healthy adults actually need. But though sleep quantity is important, quality also matters—which led me to explore alternative methods to fall asleep faster and sleep deeply. Enter This Works’ Deep Sleep Pillow Spray.

The spray features an essential oils-based blend with notes of lavender, chamomile and vetiver, as well as patchouli and ho wood. Its added limonene—which is found in citrus fruit peels—brings the scent a refreshing but subtle finish. When I spritz my pillows and the top edge of my bed cover—as instructed by the clear type on the smooth, rectangular 2.5-oz. white bottle—I often smell the lavender and chamomile scents first, which creates a soothing entry to the initial NRE (non-rapid eye movement) N1 stage of sleep, with the deeper herbal scents rising as I nod off.

Compared to evenings—especially late ones—where I haven’t used the spray, the greatest difference comes from my quality of slumber. On an average night, I can fall asleep within 15 minutes if I’m truly exhausted; If I’m simply trying to sleep at a specific time, I toss and turn for up to an hour before drifting off. The Deep Sleep spray has noticeably sped up the process; on nights when I’m feeling burnt out, I fall asleep within ten to twelve minutes after lying down. If I’m simply tired and ready for bed, I’m knocked out within 15 to 20 minutes after using the spray—increasing my sleep quantity by nearly an hour.

As a bonus, I’ve found I don’t feel groggy when waking up in the morning after using the spray. This is a sharp contrast to when I’ve tried sleep aids such as melatonin tablets. With the spray, I’m ready to wake up and get out of bed: The typical half-awake stage where I feel the urge to lay back down for another 15 minutes simply isn’t there. Though I’m sure this varies depending on individual sleep needs or schedules, I’ve found that I’m more attuned to my internal clock while using the Deep Sleep spray, waking shortly before my pre-set alarms—or simply not needing alarms at all.

For now, I intend to keep using the Deep Sleep spray on a regular basis. It’s made me more in touch with my own sleep schedule and routines, and I’ve found myself falling asleep faster on nights when I use it compared to sans-spray evenings. Its use of organic ingredients puts my mind at ease with the knowledge that I’m breathing in natural scents, and it’s also allowed me to kick my other aids to the curb.
