Even if I did have the space in my home to build a sauna, I’m not sure that I would. Believe me: Nobody loves a leisurely sweat more than I do, whether it’s to aid muscle recovery after a tough workout or to sweat out a hangover. But the idea of building something which can’t be easily moved requires more cleaning and upkeep and has the potential to become yet another construction project in my life simply doesn’t serve me.

Enter the infrared sauna blanket. At about the size of a large sleeping bag and weight of a substantial duvet, it’s portable and can be easily rolled up and hidden away in a closet or under a bed. There’s no lead time, building period, or construction experience required; simply unroll the blanket on your couch, floor, or bed, and plug it into the wall. There’s a few different brands in the market, but the best is the SunHome Saunas infrared blanket.

The idea of traditional saunas and infrared saunas are the same—to heat up the body so as to produce various results for wellbeing—but their methods are quite different. As opposed to traditional saunas that rely on heating the air, infrared saunas use infrared light to penetrate the body more deeply and directly, allowing for a more comfortable experience that’s easier (and in theory, safer) to recreate at home. Infrared saunas can be built like traditional saunas or, as I’ve discovered here, can be adapted into a convenient blanket format.

Picture this: You’re sealed up like a burrito while infrared elements create a gentle heating sensation, penetrating your skin and triggering an intense yet manageable sweat session. You’re sweating without being uncomfortably hot, if that makes sense. I’ll use mine while watching TV, reading a book, or answering emails on my phone. It heats up in a jiffy, turns off automatically thanks to a timer, and can be cooled down and cleaned off easily. Within minutes, it can be rolled up and stowed away, out of sight and out of mind.

As far as benefits, I’ll be honest—there haven’t been a ton of robust scientific studies on the benefits of infrared saunas, so extracting the truth from the marketing speak can be tricky at times. They allegedly work on everything, from relieving muscle and joint pain to lowering blood pressure to aiding in weight loss.

But having used mine multiple times a week for about a year, what I can share with confidence is my personal experience. When I use it in the evenings, I sleep deeper anbd better. The skin, from my face to my feet, appears clearer, more youthful, and glows—kind of like how I look in the summers, but without the tan or the risk of sun damage. And best of all, it’s (marginally) lowered my blood pressure. But that might have more to do with the fact that I get to experience the benefits of an infrared sauna without having had to actually build one.
