Rob Lowe

Rob Lowe is hosting a new quiz show, The Floor, which lands at FOX on Jan. 2, 2024. From the creator of Big Brother and The Voice, the game show includes a mix of trivia questions and physical challenges, and it comes with a giant cash prize.

Read on for more details about The Floor, including the rules of the show and how much the contestants stand to win.

How does The Floor work?

Taking place on a massive LED floor that’s been sectioned into a hundred squares—each one representing a different category or area of expertise (e.g. "horror movies")—the contestants will go head-to-head in timed quiz duels. A primary challenger will be selected at random and given the choice of their neighboring opponents for the quiz duel. The subject for the duel will be the category on which the opponent stands. The winning player will take over the loser’s square, giving them the ability to expand their own territory on the floor, while the loser is sadly eliminated from the game.

The winner then has a choice: face another duel with the goal of conquering another square or end their turn. In the event the turn is ended, The Floor will choose its next victim… err… challenger, and the game will continue until one player is left standing, having taken control over the entire floor. The name makes more sense now, right?

How many contestants play in an episode of The Floor?

The Floor will feature a whopping 81 contestants facing off with the hope of becoming the trivia master who conquers the floor. Two contestants will compete against each other at a time in trivia duels. In the end, only one contestant will win the ultimate prize.

What do contestants win on The Floor?

The 81 contestants competing in each episode of The Floor will be vying for their chance to win a prize of $250,000. Now that’s some life-changing money!

Who hosts The Floor?

Beloved actor Rob Lowe is both the host and a producer of FOX’s The Floor. This isn’t Lowe’s first foray into hosting an unscripted series on the network—he was previously the host of Mental Samurai for two seasons from 2019 until 2022.

FOX Entertainment’s President of Unscripted Programming, Allison Wallach, had this to say about the West Wing actor’s involvement: “The Floor combines every element needed to create a hit game show: a proven global format built on spectacle and suspense, pedigree producers in Talpa and Eureka, and a superstar host with universal appeal in Rob Lowe, who brilliantly ties the entire show together. Rob’s command of the format makes this a fun, edge of your seat, play-along competition we know viewers of all ages will enjoy.”

Is there a trailer for The Floor?

There most certainly is, and you can watch it here. The trailer opens with host Rob Lowe declaring The Floor to be “the most epic game show ever created.” We see some of the various trivia categories that contestants will be quizzed about, including "cereal" and "bugs." The trailer also emphasizes the fact that the more duels a contestant wins, the bigger their claim on the floor—and the bigger the target on their back. It definitely looks like the series will be bringing some drama along with the competition!
