The preternaturally young Rob Lowe stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Wednesday night. During his appearance, he reminisced about attending high school with some of the biggest stars of his generation way back when, including Sean Penn, Charlie Sheen, Emilio Estevez, Holly Robinson Peete, and, yes, none other than Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr.

Having just watched his old friend win a Golden Globe for his supporting role in Oppenheimer, the 59-year-old recalled how surreal it is to see his former classmates now being the ones honored for their acting achievements.

"I'm at that age now, where all my friends—when we were kids, the grown-ups won the awards," Lowe explained. "And now as we're the grown-ups, we're winning the awards, so to watch Downey go out there and do it, it's just the best."

However, when attempting to congratulate Downey on his win, Lowe admitted that he got his wires crossed and accidentally sent the text to the wrong person.

"You'll love this. Downey does this amazing acceptance speech at the Golden Globes, and I'm so excited for him," Lowe recalled. "So I text him, 'So glad you won! That was the most beautiful acceptance speech I have heard in a long time. Boy do you deserve it.' I hit [send], and I realize, 'Oh, s--t, I just sent that to Bradley Cooper.'"

Even worse, Cooper had been up for two awards at the 2024 Golden Globes for best male performance in a drama and best director in a motion picture for his Leonard Bernstein biopic, Maestro. But ultimately, he left empty handed.

"So then I was like, 'Oh I gotta make it better,' and I was like, 'No, no, I meant that for Robert Downey Jr.'—that's even worse! I'm making the guy feel worse! Terrible. I'd inputted the wrong numbers under the wrong names."

Kimmel then interjected to ask if he was able to smooth things over with Cooper. However, Lowe said that somehow, he managed to make the same mistake twice and texted the 49-year-old actor a second time. "No! I did it again! I mistakenly sent another one to Bradley. Again!" he exclaimed. "He literally said, 'No, it's fine, I like living vicariously through these mistakes.'"

Though he's been nominated over a dozen times combined, Cooper has yet to win any Golden Globes or Oscars. However, with the 2024 Academy Award nominations just around the corner and the ceremony to follow in March, if he's lucky, perhaps the next congratulatory text he receives from Lowe won't be a mistake.
