This New Road Trip Planner Makes It Easy to Book a Multi-Stop Vacation
If you're one of the millions of travelers interested in taking a road trip this summer, booking your vacation just got a whole lot simpler. Travel search site Skyscanner, known for aggregating discount flights, has launched a new, ultra-convenient road trip planner.
The new online tool combines every aspect of booking a road trip—from planning the itinerary, to renting the car, booking the hotels, and finding the best activities in each destination—into one easily searchable engine. Itineraries are categorized into four different themes—family, outdoors, romantic, and culture—so travelers can find destinations and activities that most appeal to them.
“We’ve created the ultimate tool for personalized road trips,” Anoop Goyal, CEO and co-founder of itinerary planning site Inspirock, which partnered with Skyscanner on the search tool, said in a statement. “Travelers today seek more than just the logistics of where to stay and the best route to get from A to B and B to C—they want to make the most of their precious holiday time by maximizing their enjoyment of activities and experiences along the way, and that are tailored to them.”
The tool only shows options for rental cars and hotels that are available through third-party travel sites on the days that you search, so it's a good planning resource for any procrastinators who still want to squeeze in a last-minute summer trip.
Sample road trips include a family-centric seven-day itinerary from San Francisco to San Diego, with stops in Monterey and L.A. Options for that trip include a convertible rental car, stops at Monterey's aquarium and Pacific Grove Shoreline Parkway Marine Refuge, as well as possible stays at the Kimpton Hotel Palomar in San Diego and the Freehand Los Angeles—all bookable before the end of August.
On the East Coast, there's an option for a romantic long weekend through the Low Country in mid-August. That trip includes stops in Charleston, South Carolina, and Savannah, Georgia, with stays at properties like The Alida Hotel—one of the best places to stay in Savannah—as well as activities like dolphin and whale watching.
The road trip planner will be especially useful for the large number of tourists who are still eschewing international travel for domestic trips through the summer and fall. According to Paul Cumins, Skyscanner's head of car rentals, the site wanted to “develop an offering that would help those travelers who were still keen on an escape but didn’t yet feel confident enough to go overseas or fly.” In addition to itineraries throughout the U.S., the booking tool can also plan road trips throughout Canada, the U.K., Ireland, and Australia.
