New "Riverdale" Trailer Debuts at New York Comic Con

And wow, is it intense!

We’re just days away from the fourth season of Riverdale, and fortunately, there’s a brand new trailer to tide us over.

While there’s a lot to dissect over the course of the two-and-a-half minute trailer, which debuted at New York Comic Con on Sunday, one of the most notable moments happens right at the beginning. We see Jughead, Betty, Veronica, and Archie gathered at their table at Pop’s as per usual, when all of a sudden Archie gets a devastating phone call, clearly about his dad. The camera then cuts to what can only be Fred’s funeral, as we see a picture of him surrounded by a floral wreath. Following the passing of Luke Perry earlier this year, Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa made it clear that the series would honor him with a tribute episode at the beginning of the fourth season.

Somber scenes aside, it definitely seems like the upcoming installment is going to be filled with dark twists and turns — and plenty of romance to boot. Between family secrets, a new school, evil spirits, and crime-fighting, it remains certain that the Riverdale crew will definitely not be having an ordinary senior year.

Actors Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart previously teased that their characters would be experiencing “stress” in their relationship, partly due to the fact that Jughead isn’t attending Riverdale High for his final year of high school. “I think it might be a little bit tense,” Cole told Entertainment Tonight of what BugHead fans can expect. “They might fall, turn away from each other, only to come back together way stronger. I think they're gonna be really good.”

Ahead, check out the new trailer — and then get ready to continue the Riverdale journey on October 9.
