"Riverdale" and "Katy Keene" Will Crossover With Archie and KO Kelly in the Boxing Ring
Welcome to Madison Square Garden! Step into the ring, K.O. Kelly! And you too … Archie Andrews?!? OK, we’re getting a bit ahead of ourselves here, but if a new Instagram post by Riverdale and Katy Keene creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is to be believed, the golden boy of Riverdale may be facing off with Katy Keene’s boxer boyfriend in an upcoming episode of the spinoff show.
Roberto posted a photo of KJ Apa in character as Archie, complete with blue Riverdale High shorts, posing with Zane Holtz, who plays K.O. on Katy Keene, both shirtless and looking ready for the ring. “The Riverdale/Katy Keene crossover America NEEDS right now!” He wrote. “Two new AMAZING episodes on the CW this week.” Wait … is this for real, or are we dreaming?
While Roberto remained mum on any more details regarding the crossover between the shows, we do know that the boxing connection was on Riverdale and Katy Keene writers’ and creators’ minds. “It was so funny — we did a big entire season of Archie as a boxer, and it was never imagined that Archie was going to be like Raging Bull, but halfway through the season, we started developing Katy and were like, ‘Katy’s boyfriend is a boxer,’” Sascara told EW in February of the connection. (Riverdale fans will remember Archie’s arc as a teen boxer while in juvenile detention.) “I remember one day I was like, ‘I never would have thought that I’d be working on any show in which boxing had a huge part.’ But to be working on it in two shows is slightly mind-blowing.”
Katy Keene takes place five years in the future from the current season of Riverdale, which means that if this crossover is indeed taking place in that era, something happens in Archie’s character arc to keep him on the boxing path. (What ever happened to your music career, Archie?) Of course, any Riverdale fan knows that the show is constantly throwing curveballs at its viewers, so will Archie instead face off against K.O. Kelly in an upcoming episode of Riverdale? Anything is truly possible in the little town with pep.
