Rihanna’s Hairstylist Shared the Secrets to Her BET Awards Beauty Routine

Ready to DIY.

Everything about Rihanna's style is inspiring. Whether she's hosting the debut of her recently launched Fenty fashion line or using a denim skirt as a top, the Fenty Beauty founder is never short on serving up serious looks. We may never be able to copy every one of her unforgettable ensembles, but thanks to hairstylist Yusef Williams, we're a little bit closer to replicating her epic BET Awards beauty routine.

Rihanna made an appearance at Sunday night's 2019 BET Awards (June 23), and of course her red hair and all-leather outfit was a hit among fans. Whether we can pull off leather in such a statement-making fashion remains to be seen, but in an exclusive interview with Teen Vogue, Rihanna's hairstylist for the evening shared the styling secrets to her "bad*ss baby doll" look.

According to celeb hairstylist Yusef, Rihanna's black-leather outfit—which was naturally from her Fenty line—directly inspired his styling decisions for the singer. "I wanted to play along with [her outfit] by providing some contrast and going with a more feminine look for her hair," he told Teen Vogue. He also noted that Rihanna's hair color for the evening was intended to be a focal point, saying, "For tonight’s look, Rihanna wanted to look very pretty. We were working with her beautiful burgundy hair, so I wanted to really feature the bold color and let it speak for itself."

In order to replicate the look at home, Yusef shared his complete list of products and tips. "Prepping your hair to retain moisture and shine is a great first step to achieve this look at home," he said. "I used the Suave Professionals for Natural Hair Sulfate-Free Cleansing Shampoo and Suave Professionals for Natural Hair Moisturizing Curl Conditioner to cleanse and moisturize the strands. For this specific look, detailing is key. So I went back and teased out the pony and finished with one more spritz of Suave Professionals Firm Control Finishing Hairspray."

Ready to rock your version of an award-show-worthy half-pony? Yusef noted that for some extra texture and fun, use a curling iron or added extensions to really lock in that "dreamy baby doll style." Now, with every detail of her look confirmed, we're officially ready to spend a day (or the entire summer) rocking a DIY version of Rihanna's half-up ponytail.
