Rihanna's Met Gala 2018 Look Has Fans Crowning Her the New Pope
Rihanna is already a Grammy-winning singer, burgeoning actor, ultra-generous philanthropist, makeup mogul, and lingerie designer, but after Monday night’s 2018 Met Gala, fans think she can add yet another title to her résumé: leader of the entire Catholic Church. The comparisons arose from the very pope-like hat RiRi chose to wear to the event themed “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.” Oh, and Rihanna is cohosting this year’s event, along with Donatella Versace and Amal Clooney.
Rihanna, who has pretty much won the Met Gala red carpet each of the previous years she’s attended, paired her tall, intricately beaded and embroidered papal headdress with a matching strapless minidress and long showstopping overcoat. She accessorized with a cross pendant, black bedazzled pumps, several chunky silver rings, and a small clutch that perfectly matched her outfit; makeup-wise, Rihanna opted for a purplish smokey eye, a very heavenly highlight, and a frosty pink lip.
The Ocean’s 8 star’s look prompted an endless stream of tweets from fans casting their votes to install her as the next pope — because that kind of thing should definitely be decided via Twitter poll. “I hope the pope [announces] his retirement after seeing Rihanna’s met gala outfit,” one person tweeted. Others promoted Rihanna from pope to literal god, with one writing, “Oh. My. Rihanna.” and another documenting a “holy trinity of reactions” from photographers at the event. Still others were simply blown away: One shared that all-too-appropriate shot of someone falling down the stairs at the 2015 Met Gala, which, same.
