Ridge Lenny is the younger brother of big wave surfer and multi-hyphenate waterman Kai Lenny. As his videographer, he’s been right there for some of Kai’s craziest moments in the water (as well as having a fair share of crazy moments of his own). Recently, he has been sharing some stories from the archive on his YouTube channel, and his latest video recounts the moment he recorded what he calls the first double barrel POV shot ever at Jaws.

As many photography stories do, Ridge’s started off with screwing around with equipment. After confirming that his camera was, in fact, recording, he looked up to find himself staring right into the mouth of Jaws. “At that moment, I finally turned my attention to what we were doing in the wave and I saw that the wave was stretching out really far,” explained Ridge. “When you see that, it either means that you’re gonna get closed out on, super pounded, or you’re about to get a crazy barrel. As we were going down the line and setting ourselves up. It became more and more clear that this thing was going to barrel. This could be the shot we’ve been dreaming of.”

However, then Kai took a bottom turn that immediately sent spray directly into the lens, obscuring both Kai and the lip that was heading straight for Ridge’s face. When he got his bearings, he had to make a decision – straighten out or try to pull in and risk taking the lip to the head. He risked it, and the rest is history, captured on film.
