Riders Crash Head On Around Blind Corner

It has been well-documented that multi-directional trail use can be dangerous when bikes are involved. Perhaps the most dangerous is fast two-way bike trails.

Watch a head-on collision between bikes below.

In this video, a mountain biker and an e-biker collided while traveling in different directions on a trail.

This appears to be a no-fault accident, but it is a good reminder to stay aware when riding. Hearing someone coming on the trail is the best way to stay safe on bidirectional trails that have blind turns.

Unfortunately, e-bikes make these risks higher. For e-bikes to be safe, trail associations need to be wary of promoting safe directionality for trails that allow electric bikes. Bikes that can go 20 mph uphill need to be managed differently.

At the end of the day, it is important to be alert and courteous to other trail users. The best way to protect mountain bike access is for riders to behave in a safe way to avoid injuries so that insurance companies don't get involved.
