Rider Puts Vintage 300mm 'Super Monster' Fork To The Test

The Marzocchi Super Monster T has arguably the most fabled history for a piece of suspension ever. The fork had a whopping 300 millimeters of travel and was the go-to weapon of choice for freeriders from the late 90s to the early 2000s.

For reference, nowadays these forks sell for up to $2,000 on the used market if you can find one.

How does this relic of freeride lore stack up to the modern suspension we have all grown accustomed to? Jordan Boostmaster sought to answer that question in this video.

Find out how it went below.

The Super Monster T has characteristics more closely resembling an undamped pogo stick than a mountain bike fork by today's standards, but that's not to say it didn't have its time and place in history.

The prevalent suspension theory of that era focused more on the length of travel than the efficacy of internal damping. The result was these remarkably large forks and rear shocks that not only lacked progressive damping but also would overheat and effectively seize up on long descents until the internal oil cooled off enough to flow again normally.

Suspension in general has come a very long way since then, but as always, it is still a work in progress.

That being said, we have it considerably better with suspension today. However, that still doesn't stop people from complaining endlessly about their setups. For anyone who thinks their suspension is unrideably bad, I implore you to go try a Y2K-era fork and then reconsider the ride quality of your modern suspension.

You will have a newfound sense of appreciation for it, guaranteed.
