  • Ricki Lake, 52, shared an inspiring mantra about getting older.

  • "I truly believe I'm a better me now than I was a year ago."

  • Her experience with hair loss has taught her a lot about aging and acceptance.

At 52, Ricki Lake is absolutely living through her prime. She just got engaged, she’s embracing a new hair style after a “debilitating” experience with hair loss, and she’s getting wiser every day. That’s why, contrary to the societal notion that discourages women from embracing aging, she doesn’t mind it at all.

In fact, she likens herself to a fine wine that gets better with time. “I truly believe I’m a better me now than I was a year ago,” she told Health. “Self-appreciation and self-acceptance is so important as we get older, especially as women. If we don’t cheerlead and support ourselves, who will?”

This was something Lake had to learn the hard way when she was diagnosed with androgenetic alopecia, a common form of hair loss in both women and men, due to years of show business hair styling and hormonal changes. Eventually, after years of trying an exhaustive list of hair growth supplements, extensions, diets, and more, she decided to embrace a shorter, grayer ‘do.

In 2020, she decided to shave her head and start over. “I learned so much through the process of really letting go of something that had been really bothering me,” she told Good Morning America in January. She’s also detailed her experience on Instagram in hopes of helping other women who can relate.

“My hope is that I am able to help others struggling, as I did for far too long,” she wrote in one post. “This journey has been such a gift for me, I finally truly love my hair, and more importantly love myself unconditionally from the inside out.”

The Hairspray star also recently found a relationship she’s truly happy in. “It’s all a miracle. My hair is back and I found love during COVID,” she told GMA. And now they’re getting married. She announced their engagement on May 24.

“Well, friends, he put a ring on it! 💍 ,” she captioned an Instagram photo. "#engaged to my magnificent king. I am officially the happiest woman in the land. My dear Ross, I choose you today and every day!”

See? Lake’s experience is a good reminder that there’s always something to look forward to and you’re always deserving of good things—no matter the number next to your name.
