The trailer for season 7 of animated comedy Rick and Morty has been released, and it gives us our first glimpse at a high-profile recast.

Justin Roiland, who played both Rick and Morty previously in the show, departed after season six following domestic violence charges. Adult Swim gave the roles to new voice actors for upcoming 7 season.

From the trailer, however, it doesn’t seem like much has changed. The characters sound pretty much as they always have done, and most viewers would be hard-pressed to tell them apart. So convicning are the Roiland replacements, some have even theorized the voices are AI-generated.

It hasn’t helped conspiracy theories that the identities of the new voice actors are being kept quiet for now. An Adult Swim “insider” told The Hollywood Reporter: “We want the show to speak for itself. We believe in the strength of the season and our new voices and we want to preserve the viewing experience for fans.”

This could be a move to protect the new voice actors from Internet harassment, but it might also just be Adult Swim wanting the show to speak for itself, and ensuring headlines are about the trailer, not its cast.

In any case, Rick and Morty: Season 7 premiers 5 October on Adult Swim.

It's not the only recent recast, as The Spy Kids reboot lands on Netflix and fans are not happy.
