Richard Gere Called Martha During Her Today Show Segment to Ask for One of Her Cakes

The two are actually longtime neighbors!

Martha loves to share her tips for anything home-related, and that's true whether it's decorating advice, cooking demonstrations, or her best entertaining tips. Lately, she's been focusing on baking. During an appearance the Today Show earlier this week, our founder talked about her latest book, Martha Stewart's Cake Perfection ($15, barnesandnoble.com), and demonstrated how to make three of her signature cakes—the Lemon Mousse Cake, Mile-High Salted-Caramel Chocolate Cake, and Chocolate-and-Vanilla Zebra Cake. And if you were one of the many viewers who thought the treats looked absolutely irresistible, you're not alone. As it turns out, you're actually in very good company: Richard Gere, Martha's neighbor, called to ask for cake once the segment wrapped.

According to Carson Daly, one of the hosts of The Today Show, Martha mentioned that she'd need someone to help her finish all of those delicious cakes. "At one point, Martha even said she hoped that somebody would help her eat all of those delicious treats, and then after the show as she finished the cakes on Instagram her hopes were answered," Daly explained. The host went on to note that as she was wrapping up one of her cakes, you could hear a faint phone ring in the background. "It was none other than Richard Gere," Daly added, and he was calling to say he'd to have one of her cakes after she finished on the show.

Martha even explained the exchange on her own Instagram post, sharing which cake piqued Gere's interest. "The phone call was from my neighbor @richardgereofficial. He is a neighbor and he wanted the chocolate caramel mile-high cake—we took it over to him and his family after the show!"

While we haven't heard what the actor thought of the cake—or if he ended up with the Lemon Mousse Cake or Chocolate-and-Vanilla Zebra Cake, too—the Today Show hosts are undoubtably wishing they had been with Martha to try the treats for themselves. "Well Richard, we hope you enjoyed that cake, we didn't get any in our studio—but some of the perks of being Martha Stewart's neighbor," Carson joked.
