Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star Jen Shah was sentenced to 6.5 years in prison in her telemarketing fraud case on January 6, 2023, and on Friday, Feb. 17, she reported to prison at Federal Prison Camp Bryan in Texas, per NBC. And yes, this is the very same Camp Bryan that Elizabeth Holmes will also be reporting to later this year.
Jen's scheme affected hundreds of victims and many over the age of 55. And while all eyes were on the court room this year, people also have a lot of questions about Jen's personal life and her financial situation.
In case you missed it, in July of 2022, Jen pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. “The terrible business decisions I made and professional relationships I developed stemmed from some personal painful experiences that I was going through in my life,” she wrote to the judge in her case, per CNN.
Jen's legal drama has been aired very publicly on RHOSLC (she was arrested while cameras rolled in season 2), but she seems to be taking a step out of the limelight after skipping the season 3 reunion. “The burden you have caused me is overwhelming, I can’t even really put words to the amount of anguish you have caused,” the woman wrote in an impact statement, per NBC News.
Another victim said she invested $35,000 into what she thought was creating her own e-comm business, before realizing that she was “being scammed,” she said in court, per NBC News. The woman said she had two heart attacks, that she attributed to “extreme stress.”
How much has Jen Shah paid as a result of her legal issues so far?
It’s not clear how much Jen has paid in legal fees so far, but she was ordered to pay restitution of up to $9.5 million, NBC News says. She's already paid back $6.5 million.
She was spending $50k a month before her arrest.
After Jen's arrest, the United States Justice Department said that she led a “lavish lifestyle” which she “flaunted” to the public as a symbol of her success. According to her audition tape for RHOSLC, which was obtained by Page Six, Jen claimed that she spent “at least” $50,000 a month before she was arrested.
Her family downsized their home last year.
On an RHOSLC episode from February of 2022, Jen explained the move, according to Bravo.
"We're downsizing. It's not 9,000 square feet, it's about half of that. So I would like an A for effort because I'm doing the best I can with what I can do," she said. "Like all good things, everything comes to an end, just like our lease did. So we found the next best thing: Shah Chalet 2.0."
