There’s a lot to unpack during this season of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, including a few marriages on the rocks. But there’s also a whole thing happening between Kyle Richards and Sutton Stracke that’s raising a lot of questions.

In last week's episode, Kyle suggested that Sutton might have an eating disorder. "I've seen you push around the plate and say that you have some disorder where you choke and you can't eat your food," she told her co-star. But Sutton later told the cameras in a confessional scene that she actually has an "esophagus disorder."

"I can't eat certain foods," she said. "I've been down for four days not able to swallow my own saliva. And here's my friend, making fun of me."

Details are a little vague on the exact medical condition, which has raised a lot of questions from Bravo viewers. So, what exactly is an esophagus disorder? Here’s everything you need to know about the causes, symptoms, and more:

What is an esophageal disorder?

Esophageal disorders are a group of conditions that impact your esophagus, the tube that carries food from your mouth to your stomach, according to the Cleveland Clinic. There are different types of esophageal disorders.

What’s the most common type of esophagus disorder?

The most common type of esophageal disorder is gastrointestinal reflux disease (GERD), the Cleveland Clinic explains. This can cause a slew of symptoms, including heartburn and trouble swallowing.

What causes esophageal disorders?

There are a few risk factors for developing an esophageal disorder. Per the Cleveland Clinic, those include:

  • Using alcohol

  • Carrying extra weight

  • Medications like some antibiotics, antidepressants, and pain relievers

  • Radiation therapy to the neck or chest

  • Smoking

What are the common symptoms?

Symptoms can vary depending on the esophageal disorder you have. However, Mount Sinai says the most common signs are heartburn, discomfort when you eat, trouble swallowing, and regurgitating food.

How are esophageal disorders diagnosed?

Esophageal disorders are diagnosed with a physical exam, followed by diagnostic tests, the Cleveland Clinic says. Those can include an upper endoscopy to look at your digestive tract using a thin scope; gastrointestinal X-rays to see how a barium solution flows through your esophagus and digestive tract; an esophageal manometry, which measures how well the muscles in your esophagus work as you swallow liquid; and an esophageal pH test to measure the amount of stomach acid in your esophagus.

If you suspect that you might have an esophageal disorder, contact your doctor. They can advise you on diagnosis and treatment options.
