Saoirse Kennedy Hill, the 22-year-old grandchild of Robert and Ethel Kennedy, died Thursday on Cape Cod in Massachusetts, the family has said in a statement.

According to the New York Times, she suffered "an apparent overdose at the Kennedy compound in Hyannis Port."

Paramedics were called to the compound this afternoon, and Hill was taken to the local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

"Our hearts are shattered by the loss of our beloved Saoirse," said the Kennedy family in a statement. "Her life was filled with hope, promise and love. She cared deeply about friends and family, especially her mother Courtney, her father Paul, her stepmother Stephanie, and her grandmother Ethel."

Hill was the daughter of Courtney Kennedy Hill, the fifth of Robert and Ethel Kennedy's 11 children, and Irishman Paul Michael Hill.

“The world is a little less beautiful today,” Hill's uncle RFK Jr. said in a statement this evening. “She lit up our lives with her love, her peals of laughter and her generous spirit. … We will love and miss her forever.”

At this point, no funeral details have been shared publicly, and Hill's death is still under investigation by local police.

"Earlier this afternoon Barnstable Police responded to a residence on Marchant Ave in Hyannisport for a reported unattended death," said Cape and Islands Assistant District Attorney Tara Miltimore in a statement.

"The matter remains under investigation by Barnstable Police and State Police detectives assigned to the District Attorney's Office."
