Reviewing the news: Summer resorts and campers

April 19, 1924: Resort property in Cheboygan has bright future says real estater

Cheboygan resort property is on the move. This morning R. A. Felt returned home from Detroit where he closed a deal for the hundred acres of Mackinaw Heights Resort and several lots located at other points near Cheboygan, and he sees a great boom in the resort business this summer when the whole section will be teeming with tourists.

The Mackinaw Heights Resort is located at Freedom, ten miles west of the city and overlooking Mackinac Island with a beautiful beach stretched along the shores of the straits. The property was platted about ten years ago by Dr. A. M. Gerow and twenty two lots have already been taken over by notified purchasers. Three cottages have already been erected, one by Mrs. F. E. Smith of  Bay City, one by Rev. W. B. Williamson of Detroit, and formerly rector of St. James church, this city.

The new owner of Mackinaw Heights is Frank J. Coleman of Detroit, Mich. with whom Mr. Fultz closed the deal this week and all that remains to conclude the purchase of the large holding is the straightening out of matters appertaining to the lots sold prior … with Mr. Coleman, which is only a matter of detail. Mr. Fultz represented the heirs of the estate of Dr. A. M. Gerow.

It is not expected that much will be done this season to develop the property but Mr. Coleman, the owner will prepare his plans this year for the erection of a summer hotel which will be more modern than any resort hotel in this region. Mr. Coleman is engaged in the real estate business in Detroit where he owns considerable property.

April 19, 1974: Trickle of campers starting at parks

Warming weather has brought a handful of spring campers to five state parks in the Cheboygan area that last year drew over 412,000 campers during the season.

Already a few reservations have been received for summer campsites. People looking ahead to their summer vacations applied for certain favored locations in state parks.

This is the first year that it has been possible to make a reservation in advance for a particular campsite.

Often at peak of the summer parks have been so packed that it was necessary to turn people away.

The rush of campers will step up toward Decoration Day.

A survey of Aloha, Burt Lake, Cheboygan, Onaway, and Wilderness Parks shows that number of day users increased last year, but campers declined, possibly due to some cool weather in early summer. The Cheboygan park had three times as many day users as campers, due to popularity of the sandy bathing beach.
