The New Balance 1080 is one of the best-selling running shoes in the past decade, and the v12 edition only endorses how the evolution of this shoe keeps delivering results for modern runners.

The New Balance 1080 v12 is a classic training shoe that deserves a place in every runner's shoe closet. Alright, the “shoe closet” might be a fantasy, but the 1080 from New Balance is a style that every runner should at least test out on their next visit to their local running store.

What's New

A few testers have noted the v12 of the New Balance 1080 runs about half a size bigger than the previous edition. It's definitely more roomy in the toe area and longer in length. If you are on the edge of sizing, you might want to consider a half size down.

The Fresh Foam X midsole is still on point and one of the key benefits of the 1080. Cushioned yet springy, this makes the shoe comfortable for long runs, and springy enough for short, sharp ones.

Another small but noticeable update in this version is the heel collar. The previous edition had a niggling heel flare that just did not sit right on this reviewer’s foot; it almost felt as if I was about to slip out of the shoe. But that has been replaced, and now you don't even notice the heel collar, which is the best-case scenario.

When you open the box you see a Green Leaf icon hanging from a tag. This is part of New Balance's green leaf standard, meaning the upper is made of 50 percent or more recycled content, and at least one midsole/outsole material contains a minimum of 3 percent bio-based or 5 percent recycled content. Start to look out for this tag on all New Balance shoes and apparel as a reference point for what’s being produced more sustainably.

Who the New Balance 1080 v12 is Best For

The 1080 v12 is a versatile running shoe and that is a go-to daily trainer for logging the base miles and getting time on the legs. The cushioning is on point with the Fresh Foam X midsole and it has foot-soothing comfort thanks to the flexibility of the Hypoknit upper.

The New Balance 1080 v12 is the shoe you'll just keep reaching for as company on a mind-clearing run, or to check some mile-markers for your next race goal. It's comfortable, springy, fresh, and flexible--just make sure you try on for the best size for your foot.

From Our Wear Tester

Fatigued feet everywhere, we implore you to try a pair of New Balance 1080s on for size. It’s arguably one of the most comfortable road trainers available today, with a snug woven upper that conforms to the foot while maintaining breathability. Though it might not look it, the toe of the shoe is plenty wide, giving your toes ample room. And the foam midsole provides springy cushion without feeling bulky.

All in all, a stellar road companion for the many miles ahead.
