Review: Is Wahl’s $50 Rechargeable Foil Shaver a Solid Bald Head Shaver to Consider?

This time around, I got the chance to test out one of the most trusted brands in buzzing. That’s right, I’m talking about none other than Wahl.

As somebody who solely uses Wahl to trim up his beard, I expected the brand’s Bump-Free Rechargeable Foil Shaver to fill up some pretty big shoes. But, after testing a slew of other impressive alternatives like the Skull Shaver Pitbull Gold PRO, the Remington Balder Pro and, of course, Braun’s Series 9 Pro, I wasn’t exactly sure if Wahl was going to have it in them.

Design

I’ve said it thousands of times, but I’ve become a victim to the classic overhand, all-over ergonomic design that’s typical with the most popular bald shavers. But, sadly, the Wahl Foil Shaver lacks that.

Instead, this shaver has a design that’s super straightforward and extremely similar to the Andis Profoil. It’s somewhat rectangular in its approach with a thinner bottom half. This makes the device have somewhat of an awkward hold, but it is still quite ergonomic as you buzz.

If you’ve ever gotten a fade done at a barbershop, this is essentially what your barber was using. It feels made much better for someone giving haircuts rather than someone giving a haircut to themselves.

The top of the shaver offers two foil heads with quite a bit of bounce to allow users to press down a little bit. This makes the shaver feel a little cheaper if you look up close and press down with your thumb. It more or less gives a “am I going to break this?” kind of feel.

In addition, there are no LCD screens or anything fancy on this device. All you’ll find is a slide-up button in the very front that allows you to turn the shaver on and off, a button on the side that allows you to take the head off to release caught hairs and a pop-up back trimmer for better edges.

This device is not waterproof and has a battery life that reaches about an hour on a full charge. It’s very grippy, so if you have sweaty hands, you should be safe to continue this shave without the shaver slipping.






Pricing

Out of all of the bald head shavers I’ve seen online, the Wahl Foil Shaver definitely places itself in a lower price tier. But, that said, it kind of shows in its design.

On Amazon, you’ll be able to find this shaver for just around $50. At Target, you can catch this baby for just about $60, making it $10 higher at the retailer.

Obviously, Amazon is your best bet, especially because shipping with Amazon is so quick and easy.

Putting It to the Test

Because of my experience with the Andis Profoil, I wasn’t super excited to open up the packaging and see this design. I didn’t drool over the Profoil post-shave, so I was definitely bummed to see Wahl’s initial similarities.

Upon shaving, I started with the very top of my head. With Andis, I went for the sides first. I thought maybe starting in a different area with a similar shaver would allow me to enjoy the shave more.

Sadly, I’m not entirely sure that was the case.

It took go-over after go-over after go-over to rid of any hair on my head whatsoever. I tried pressing down, I tried using lightly, I feel like I tried it all. It worked, yeah, but it took a ton of time and effort.

In the beginning, no hair was falling down into the sink. But, somewhere toward the middle of my shave, I noticed that hair began falling out from somewhere as I continued. Everything was where it should have been, meaning that the hair should have stayed in the lock chamber, but that wasn’t the case.

As mentioned, the hold absolutely is not my favorite. It made it much more difficult to get the back of my head properly and left me having to go over and over the same spots numerous times

One thing I have to mention: out of every bald head shaver, I’ve never had any nicking or pulling. That changed with Wahl. At one point, I definitely felt a pull on my head. It was relatively alarming because I’d become so comfortable with bald head shavers not doing that, but I guess that’s simply something that comes with the lower price point.






Positives

Here’s where I normally chat about the issues regarding each bald head shaver I’ve tested. But, I already did that. Instead, I thought I’d highlight some positives about this device instead.

First off, the area above my ears was a pretty effortless shave. I’ve found that due to the obtrusive nature of ears, a lot of bald head shavers have a difficult time really ridding of hair. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case here. It was a pretty smooth experience in that area.

In addition, I was also able to get an accurate cut where my beard meets my bald head, which was most definitely a plus. I’ve mentioned having to go back with a straight razor to cut fix up that part of my hair, but the back pop-up trimmer really helped me out here.

Also in a positive light, this shaver is literally $50. That’s cheap for a bald head shaver and shouldn’t go unnoticed.






The Verdict: Cheap in Two Ways

I need to reiterate: I love Wahl. I will always and forever be a massive fan of their best beard trimmers. That said, I don’t think this is the best bald head shaver in the world. Is it good? Eh. Is it okay? Most definitely. It gets the job done, it’s affordable and technically speaking, it works. At this point, I’ve just experienced so much better that I’m not outright floored in the slightest.

So Should You Buy It?

There are many other bald head shavers to consider that are way better, such as the Skull Shaver Pitbull Gold PRO, the Remington Balder Pro and Braun’s Series 9 Pro. That being said, these bald head shavers are way more expensive than the Wahl Foil Shaver.

If you are more of a budget buyer, the Wahl Foil Shaver might be a considerable option for you, but it’s definitely not the best. I’d suggest one of the above options instead.
