Review: I’m a Hot Sleeper, and I’m Obsessed With This Cooling, Eco-Friendly Comforter from Coyuchi

I run extremely hot, and I start sweating super easily. I carry a bandana pretty much everywhere I go in case I start visibly sweating, which is pretty much always during the summer months. I also get really warm at night, and I absolutely hate night sweats. Unfortunately, I sleep with a partner who likes to be wrapped up like a burrito under as many blankets as possible, and it’s not easy to find bedding products we both love. This comforter is the exception. Specifically, I’m talking about the Coyuchi Diamond-Stitched Organic Cotton Comforter.

I will say this: I’ve tested a lot of products in my time at Spy — massage guns, earbuds, countless grooming products, sex toys, etc. I was not expecting my favorite product of the summer to be a comforter, but the heart wants what the heart wants. Now, I’m wondering how I ever slept without cooling comforters in the first place.

Seriously, I’m weirdly obsessed with my new Coyuchi comforter. While it’s not specifically marketed as a cooling comforter, I’ve found it to be extremely light and breezy even during the current heat wave. At the same time, my freezing cold girlfriend is also happy. Below, you’ll find my full review of the Coyuchi Diamond-Stitched Organic Cotton Comforter, which is made from eco-friendly materials by one of our favorite direct-to-consumer companies of the summer. We’ll also share some info on Coyuchi, which may be new to you.

Coyuchi Is the Eco-Friendly Textile Brand That Will Let You Sleep Like a Baby at Night

If you’ve stepped outside or read the news lately, then it might feel like the world is on fire. That’s because some parts of it are! I’m writing this review on the first day of July, and already I can say that this summer has been really, really uncomfortably hot. And as shoppers look for ways to become more eco-friendly and socially conscious with their purchase power, there is a growing number of companies offering green products that help consumers sleep better at night — and I’m not talking figuratively.

Coyuchi is a California-based organic textile company that makes premium bedding and apparel with organic cotton and sustainable practices. Coyuchi was actually one of the first companies to introduce linens made from organic cotton. The company was founded 30 years ago in 1991 with a small California shop before launching an online store. And as a direct-to-consumer company making eco-friendly comforters, bedsheets and towels, the company seems tailor-made for this particular moment in consumer history, when DTC brands like Brooklinen and Bloomscape are super popular with trendy millennial shoppers.

Coyuchi doesn’t just talk about being eco-friendly. The company truly does follow the latest sustainable practices, and they only use cotton that’s certified to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). And according to the company’s website:

  • Coyuchi invites customers to send back old Coyuchi linens with a pre-paid shipping label. Customers who do will save 15% off their next order, and that means old linens don’t end up in landfills.

  • Coyuchi’s 2nd Home Renewed program upcycles the returned linens. So far the company has reclaimed 34,694 lbs of fabric.

  • Coyuchi uses eco-friendly packaging and sends its products in 100% organic fabric bags instead of plastic. The company is trying to become 100% plastic-free by 2022.

  • The company partners with factories that recycle 98% of their wastewater.

The brand isn’t quite as well known as brands like Avocado or Brooklinen, and I wanted to find out if they’ve got the goods. The company sent us a sample pack containing some of its bedding products, and we’ll be sharing a few more reviews in the weeks ahead.

What We Loved About the Diamond-Stitched Organic Cotton Comforter

I’ve absolutely fallen in love with: the Coyuchi Diamond-Stitched Organic Cotton Comforter. Like I said, I run extremely hot at night but I don’t like to sleep uncovered. This comforter has kept me cool and cozy even as the temperatures here in Brooklyn have climbed uncomfortably high. (My girlfriend, who falls asleep pretty much instantly, has also had a positive experience, and she’s something of a blanket-snob.)

First off, Coyuchi really does take sustainability seriously. Every product they sent me arrived in a fabric bag, which appeared to be made from remainder scraps of the company’s cotton bedsheets. I couldn’t find a single piece of plastic anywhere in the product packaging, which is extremely rare. The product itself is made from 360 gsm organic cotton batting. The fabric is Fair Trade Certified and grown and woven in India.

Priced at $298 for a Full/Queen size comforter, the price is competitive with other premium textile brands. Soft, light and fluffy, the comforter can actually be used as a blanket with or without the duvet cover, which is not included. This comforter was also designed for year-round use, and the reviews on Coyuchi’s website rave about its ability to keep you warm in the winter as well as cool in the summer, to which I can testify.

Finally, unlike most comforters, Coyuchi’s comforter is machine washable, which is a convenient perk.

What We Didn’t Like About the Coyuchi Organic Cotton Comforter

The price might give some people pause. Unfortunately, organic fabrics and sustainability don’t always come cheap. That being said, for customers who plan on using it year-round, $300 is a pretty reasonable price for an eco-friendly product such as this. That being said, the company’s duvet covers also cost between $238-$298, so if price is a concern, it’s worth looking at the Coyuchi sale section or searching elsewhere for a duvet cover.

Second, if you plan on using this as a blanket or without a duvet cover, it’s not as soft against the skin as some comforters or blankets we’ve used. We would definitely recommend using this product with a duvet cover, like the one pictured below.

The Verdict: A More Than Worthy Investment

If you’re looking for a cozy, all-year comforter, this is an excellent option. Best of all, it comes from a company that supports the environment with organic materials and sustainable business practices. As a direct-to-consumer company, you can purchase the Coyuchi Organic Cotton Comforter and matching duvet covers from the brand’s online store. The comforter is available in Twin, Full/Queen and King sizes.
