Far Cry 6’s third and final DLC installment – Joseph: Collapse – releases on Tuesday, February 8th, and it takes us on an all-new adventure that looks into the backstory of Joseph Seed, the villain of Far Cry 5.

As usual, Far Cry 6 Season Pass holders can immediately jump into this add-on experience, and it’s also available as a stand-alone purchase (Far Cry 6 base game is required for all DLC). If you don’t own Far Cry 6, you can subscribe to Ubisoft+ on PC, Google Stadia, or Amazon Luna to instantly access the main game plus all available DLC.

Continuing the season pass’s exploration of previous Far Cry villains, Joseph: Collapse is a stand-alone experience that features a nightmarish version of Hope County, Montana and offers familiar yet intense gunplay elements along with some interesting progression mechanics.

Since exploration and discovery are large components of enjoying Joseph: Collapse, I’ll keep things vague and just say that you play as Joseph on a journey of inner reflection and soul searching that sheds a bit more light on the events leading up to Far Cry 5.

When the game starts, you wake up in a church with nothing but your wits. The map is obscured in a fog of war, there’s an armory to get a free pistol, and a mirror that allows upgrading of your character traits.

Of course, you don’t have any currency to do any of the above, so getting richer is the first order of business, and an important one at that. Luckily, everything you do in the game helps you earn currency, from taking out enemies to completing challenges, or simply finding them in chests scattered around town.

To “finish the game,” there’s only one main objective, but it’s a very difficult 3-part mission. And much like the recently released Rainbow Six Extraction, death in Joseph: Collapse has real consequences. When you die, you lose all of your weapons, currency and mission progress. That’s right, I said mission progress – this means you need to complete all three parts of the main mission in one sitting without dying. Boy, did my palms get sweaty!

I found this aspect to be quite challenging and intriguing. Yes, you can theoretically attempt the main mission right away with just your pistol and gaming talent, but it’s much wiser to explore the area and unlock better weapons, powerful upgrades, and very useful permanent character traits.

As you’re leveling up Joseph, you can save and quit while inside a safe area as often as you’d like and retain your on-hand weapon inventory and currency stash. Any unlocked weapon kits, weapon upgrades, and character traits also remain permanently available to you. But the keyword here is “available”. Like I mentioned before, if you die, you lose your money and equipped inventory, and have to re-earn enough currency to buy them all back, which takes some time. Tread carefully because it’s a vicious loop; kind of like a bad dream…

As with any Far Cry game, you can play however you like – go loud and shoot everything in sight, or keep it low and slow, sneaking around for the silent kill. Going stealth is my favorite play style, and Joseph: Collapse offers plenty of tools to get the job done without raising any alarms.

You can also bring in a friend who already owns Far Cry 6 for some co-op action (using the same platform only; no cross play), but only one of you needs to own the Joseph: Collapse DLC. While playing co-op, everyone will earn the same rewards that can be used in the main Far Cry 6 game – this is also true for the person who doesn’t own the DLC.

As frustrating as it is not being able to save mission progress, I’m quite enjoying Joseph: Collapse because it requires more thinking and strategizing than many other first-person shooters available today. Currency management is always at the forefront, and I’m constantly debating whether to push forward and risk losing it all, or head to safety and bank what I have in the form of a light yet permanent upgrade. This DLC is all about mind games… *wink wink*

How will you choose to survive this never-ending nightmare?
