The Return of Barneys at Saks Fifth Avenue
Barney’s is back! Well, sort of. No longer on Madison Avenue, the New York City icon has taken up residence on the fifth floor of the Saks Fifth Avenue flagship. Called “Barneys at Saks,” the 54,000-square-foot department offers the beloved retailer a new chapter. After Barneys filed for bankruptcy in August 2019 and all locations were closed, devoted fans were upset. The retailer was known as the place for discovering new designers and launched names such as Alaïa and Comme des Garcons, alongside standard favorites among the fashion set.
The relaunch of Barneys will feature a curated mix of established and emerging labels, introducing 16 new brands to Saks. “We are excited to bring Barneys at Saks to life in a way that is relevant for today’s luxury consumer with a strong focus on discovery and the unexpected,” said Tracy Margolies, chief merchant at Saks Fifth Avenue, in a statement. “As an extension of Saks’ current luxury offerings, Barneys at Saks will offer unparalleled fashion from a wide range of emerging brands alongside labels that Saks customers already know and love. We look forward to welcoming our customers to this inspiring destination, where we will continue to cultivate up-and-coming designers and offer unique ways to experience fashion at Saks.” To celebrate the launch, Saks partnered with several emerging designers, including Anna Mason and Fear of God, to create mini shops that embody each brand’s identity. The fifth floor will also host Honeybrains, a fast casual restaurant that is dedicated to brain healthy foods vetted by a team that includes a neurologist and dietician.
Barneys at Saks will also open as a standalone, two-story, 14,000 square foot store in Greenwich, Connecticut on January 25 in what used to be the former Saks Fifth Avenue The Collective contemporary women’s store.
